Terrorism is the word that the invaders/occupiers/oppressors use to describe the resistance to their oppression. It's a propaganda spin on resistance to oppression. A political concept created by the oppressor.
When the resistance no longer stands as an organized military force, because they have been conquered, they are called terrorists because they won't stop resisting. The Nazis called anyone who fought back during their conquests and occupations terrorists. The Afrikaners called the Afican National Congress, and anyone that they viewed as a threat, terrorists. The Israelis call the people of Palestine terrorists because they still resist the conquest and occupation of the nation, that used to be Palestine and is now called Israel. The USA refers as "terrorists" to the people who do not accept being pushed around and manipulated by the USA and it's guns and money and imperialism. And as you state, the colonists were refered to as terrorists when they no longer accepted the oppressive British rule.
Terrorism is a flipside to imperialsm. They always travel in pairs.

...the Mayflower sailed away from Europe for the right to freedom of thought and worship.. yes america has made mistakes, being made up of human beings.. but the current idea that she is more evil than all others is self defeating (and is a politically correct bigotry). If america was so evil we would have let hitler wipe out europe and then some, til he got to our shores and capitals.. and we would long ago have conquered all of mexico and canada and would now rule the world with an iron fist.. I think it is in the psyche of modern man and the nations that we can broker peace with dictators and genocidal rulers.. And we even strengthen them so we can have world peace sooner..
...Is there anything wrong with this picture? What's wrong with terrorists? Well, in the hereafter, ask our grand children, for it's very likely they will find out by experience.. or ask Daniel Pearle..

First of all, the men who killed the British were fighting so that our country was no longer ruled by a tyrant. They did not use terrorism, and in fact did not want to resort to violence at all, but the King of England gave these men no choice. They were able to get us out from under the king's rule so that we could live in a free nation, where anybody can believe in whatever they want. It was not founded by the use of terrorism. And if you don't like the way it's done here, you are more than welcome to go live in a terrorist country and I'm sure you will realize very quickly what is really wrong with terrorism.

There are so many things wrong with your question! The early Americans were oppressed people and starting the revolution was an act against another country specifically their military, not against innocent civilians. We did not try to annihilate the British people, only seek out independance. Terroists seek to rob others of freedom and kill innocent people. I would be very careful when comparing our founding fathers to terrorists. Active duty servicemen such as myself might consider those words treasonous.

Terrorism is always considered a justifiable instrument by those that use it, and an outrage against humanity by those on the receiving end of it. One need only look at the long and unfortunate history of US intervention in Central and South America to see that the American government has always felt justified using any means available to protect its interests, including assassins and paramilitary death squads. Most of the victims of these actions would,if they were still alive, probably denounce the US for sanctioning acts of terrorism against their countries.

Amazing.
I was one of countless Brits who watched in horror on the TV as those buildings burned, and people who were simply going about their business leaped to their deaths.
And now, here, I read that maybe the terrorism which resulted in so many awful and wholly unjustifiable deaths is what? Some kind of karma? Payback for the imagined sins of the fathers of the innocents? That because the Yanks of yesteryear quite rightly fought for and gained their Independence it's okay to mouth obscenities like "what is wrong with terrorism"???
Have you no shame?

Maybe you should look up the definition of terrorist. The colonists were not terrorists, because they were killing soldiers, men who had signed into the army, and knew that death was a possibility.
A terrorist fights against society, by killing anyone, anywhere. Women, children, anyone. Civilians, mostly.
There is a large ethical difference between killing an armed man and killing a small child.

Your nation was a sovereign country, the sovreign being King George. The war of independence was aimed at creating a republic.
As one of your answerers says, despite your views, you really should look at the facts before parading your ignorance.

Good answer, usmc9252004, but let me add that "one man's terrorist is NOT another man's hero!!" That's an idiotic concept. Heroes do not hide behind women and children, putting them in eminent danger. Heroes do not set up their headquarters in hospitals and schools. Heroes do not strap bombs onto their feeble-minded youths and send them to blow up non-combatants. Heroes do not target civilian targets. Heroes do not kill their own citizens. Heroes do not cut off the heads of their enemy with a knife while videotaping it for the evening news. That is terrorism. Terrorists have no sense of honor. No respect for human life. Terrorists are the worst kind of human slime and it is criminal to compare terrorists to those American heroes and the heroes of other nations who fought bravely and honorably to free themselves from tyrannical oppression. In life, there are things that are right and wrong: it is not relative, Mary.

The USA was founded by people who believed that they could create a better place for themselves and there families by starting a new type of government here that allowed people to think for themselves. In order to achieve this they had to fight for that right.
The terrorist believe that they need to destroy everyone who does not believe the way that they believe, because everyone who is not like them are evil.
