I would go with a Volkswagen Golf or one of the many other new hatchbacks out there now. You can cram people into your trunk if you need to (and they can still breathe), and some of those cars get up to 40 miles to the gallon in gas. I just like the Golf the best because of the interior. :)

most anything with a 4 cylinder volkswagon makes a pretty good diesel engine for there cars but the maintance costs can be higher for diesels than gas hope this helps

I love my Hyundai Elantra
I drives awesome and I get 400 miles to a 12 gallon tank!!!

cavaliers, sunfires, etc
i drive a pontiac firefly, its real easy on gas.. 50mpg.
