try watching the real 9/11 documentary it shows you why you should value your life and is the most aww inspireing and inspirational film i have ever seen and/or heard of
it is called :

Inside the Inferno
The 9/11 documentary.

two brothers had set out to vidio document the life of a firefighter. what they got was an inside view of the tower as it collapsed. your life will be altered by this movie i have seen it and mine was.
for more info on the movie (they are not making a profit off of it) go to:

Memento is similar to Butterfly Effect in plot (though it involves memory loss and flashbacks).

La Vita e Bella is quite good (English title is "Life is Beautiful" but it is much better in Italian with English subtitles than when dubbed in English). --this more life-altering than adventure. Takes place in WWII largely in a concentration camp (halfway to a chick flick but not quite there)

The Matrix makes you think and has several messianic overtones (while also mixing in some eastern philosophy in a typical post-modernist mesh)

End of the Spear is a telling story, the plot and scenery carry the movie over the acting (which is not bad, simply not top notch). It speaks of how one of the last tribes of Indians in South Americans to uphold murder as a way of life changed in the presence of men who did not resist their deaths. (pretty violent at times, but still quite good)

Try "Looking for Mr. Goodbar". It's a little harder to find, but it's so disturbing that it will make you shitt your pants. If you're into movies that provide a social commentary, you may also want to try Cabaret, also made in the 70's.

Well, Brian, I don't know what type of movie you like, in terms of gen ere, or how scary you want the life altering movie to be. But my suggestions are: Back To The Future, The Fly, Duets, Honey and Die Hard.

I like Dogma with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon... it makes you go "hmmmmm" and then you get to laugh a little.... The Seventh Sign with Demi Moore is also a "hmmmm" movie to me. Fight Club is out there too and there is always the great Clockwork Orange..... a classic "hmmmmm" movie... with extra "M"'s!

I find life-altering movies to be those based on fact.

Schindler's List
Dances with Wolves
Saving Private Ryan.
