My younger sister is 15. She wears the same thing. She looks a lot older than she is and gets hit on by older men. I'll admit that I was wearing the same thing...at seventeen. Fourteen is just too young. My sister also has four friends that are her age that have babies. Three more are pregnant. Is that enough said?

Well I'm not a mother, but an older sister of a teenage girl. My mom won't let her our of the house in a string bikini, even though she wants to wear one. A bikini is one thing, but a string bikini is quite another. And that fact that she is only 14 is scarey. It's hard for teenage girls to dress modestly these days (sadly) but there are a TON of way cute 2 pieces out there that I'm sure she would love. I'm only 25, so this advice doesn't come from an "old lady." :)
Check out Venus Swimwear online. They have the half naked stuff, but they also have some really cute ones as well. I love the volleyball hot shorts and halter top (red 2 piece) and any of the ones with the little flared skirts. Those are really popular right now.
Tell her she has to wait until she's 18 to wear a string bikini.
I own a little online business that sells beach-inspired apparel, and accessories. Check it out at www.breezybeachwear.com
Maybe bribe her with a beach bracelet or a hoodie if she promises to dress her age. Good luck!

I have been reading these answers and I have to say, that most feedback is from an older generation and they are missing a few things.
A) Most girls are in string bikinis these days. She wants to fit in and I understand that you feel she is too revealing. My mother and I had the same fight. So, a regular bikini to the beach, a string in the backyard tanning with friends.
B) MALE ATTENTION?!?!? The boys in her grade have already seen girls in slutty outfits that leave nothing to the imagination. A string bikini isn't anything. They may hoot and hollar - but teach your daughter to hold her head high and realize that these boys aren't the ones she wants to be around. As for older guys - well, some are pervs and once again, just tell her about all that crap (date rape, one-night-stands, etc;). If she is with her friends she will be fine. She will be one of many walking around in a teeny bikini.
C) You said she is "very skinny". Okay, this is blunt. But guys don't like twigs. Look at Nicole Richie - gross! No guy will try to get into her pants with those bones. Skinny is safe. I used to be extremely thin and before the emaciated stage I wore bikinis to the beach and got nothing. Guys don't like it. I was actually told to cover up 'cause of my ribs.
So to conclude, I think it's fine and she needs to learn and be comfortable about herself. Times are changing, but she and all teens are learning at the same time. Let her go - if she realizes it's not for her, she'll wear something else next time. If a guy makes a pass, she should be prepared to handle that.
In the end, it is your judgement that passes. And you are the parent so it's all up to you. Good luck, but trust me, it's not a big deal in her generation - the skimpy thing - it's just the way she is growing up, a very fleshy society...but it can be done in a non $lutty way! My friends and I do it every day!

I am 16, and would not wear a string bikini in a public place. In fact I wouldn't even wear one in my own yard.
A couple of years ago I went on holidays with my family. One day my brother and I (14yo & 12yo) went to the beach while Mum and Dad went somewhere else. I wore a bikini with a string top and a full bottom. I lost the top in the surf. Neither my brother or I had a shirt so I had to spend the rest of the day on the beach topless.
Some of my friends wear string bikinis. Almost all of them have had accidents at times and been embarrassed. I refuse to wear one.
Encourage your daughter to wear a normal bikini. She won't look out of place like she might in a 1 piece, but will have the security of knowing it stays on. And it's a reasonable compromise between the string bikini she wants and the 1 piece you want

Well, I'm fourteen myself, and when I go to the local pool or to the beach all I see is girls my age, classmates etc wearing things like that. I'm not saying it's entirely appropriate, but that IS what's "in". In my opinion, if you enforce a rule that requires she wear a one-piece when out with her friends, not only might it anger her, but her friends and classmates will probably make rude comments to her, even though, tecnically, there's nothing really wrong with a one-piece. My suggestion is that if you're uncomfortable with the whole string-bikini thing, get her to buy a two piece which covers her with more than just strings. In that case, it's socially acceptable and you'll both be more comfortable. I hope I helped out a bit. Good luck.

I am a young mother (25), I feel a string bikini is completely inappropriate for some one that young. She may get some grief for wearing a one piece, but there are lots of tasteful, modest, and (most important for her) cool and fashionable two piece swimsuits available. I personally would not allow a daughter of mine where what looked like lingerie out in public.
Far too many young ones are put into the position of being sexual objects way too soon.

I am a parent of a 13 yr old girl. I think wether or not she gets ridiculed depends on where you live, living in Salt Lake no one wore two piece swimsuits, but now we are in Kansas on a army post and I am shocked at some of the things I see teens wearing to the pool. I was blessed to have a pretty modest daughter who doesn't like being too exposed. but she does wear a two piece suit. I know I am not much help sorry.

It is not normal. I am a parent of a 3 year old boy. And if she was my daughter I would not allow her to dress that way. It is the parents these days. They don't really care what their kids do or dress. Teens want to be all grown up. They don't understand what kind of trouble they can get them selves into. I would have a talk with her parents. And yes a child that age can wear a 1 piece and enjoy her day at the pool.

i'm 18 and my 14 year old sister wears string bikini's.
about the one piece. good luck. kids are mean.
if your little girl is on the bigger side then suggest a tankini, or get her more active so she looses some weight.
but if she can pull it off then make some modest rules. you can still wear a bikini and be modest.
there are some suits that look like their tied at the sides but really are a regualr bottom with strings at the sides to tie for the look.
for the top, the full triangle might be a bit much. but mabye a halter with more coverage.
whatever she wears. make sure she feels beautiful in it.
i think for your comfort level ahve her start on a tankini then make a commitment to yourself that when she gets older she can choose for herself.

Not at all! I'm neither a parent or a teen. I'm 23 and probably in no position to give this advise because i have no parenting experience but i'll give it any way. I would tell her that one of the best things a woman can do for herself is present her self in a respectable manor from the clothes she wears to the company she keeps to the language she uses at 14 it will be hard for her to understand but as she gets older she will really appreciate averything you taught her. If you demand nothing but the best from her thats what you will get from her. I know the teen yrs are hard but my mom and i are closer than ever despite the hell i gave her during mine.

I think that that kind of bathing suit is not appropriate for a 14 year old. I feel that in wearing that stuff she doesn't have much self respect. And if you think about it there are one to any child mellesters and preditors out there and she needs to keep that in mind. Also they can undress you with their eyes and when she wears that kind of stuff it is modivation for them.
No they don't have rules against that kind of stuff cause then they would be going against free will. They could get suid for something like that.
I don't think that a girl is ridiculed for wearing a one-piece. I had a cute red one-piece last year and most of my friends said it looked nice. She might think that she will get made fun of cause the one piece image went out of style. But if you look you'll find cute/sexy one-pieces. You can even see them on music videos on MTV.
i'm a teenager. ^_^
