When I take it on a 50 mile + trip, sometimes the rpm's will go to zero and the engine will die when I put in the clutch and and take it out of gear. Then after it sits over night the rpm's will run really high when I start it, and then after running a little bit, goes back to normal. the check engine light is on when all this happens, and it only SOMETIMES happens. What could this be? Easy fix, or major tune-up needed? oh and is now backfireing a little when it happens. Do I get bad gas sometimes? Or maybe something bigger?

I would think the problem is probaby the gas tank. I had the same problem with my 98'. I changed the gas line and the fuel filter, and it worked for a bit, but the problem was the gas tank, there was too much sediment in it, and it kept getting sucked into the filter.. it stalled and backfired.. low or hi RPM. all sounds the same. Take it to a mechanic, or if you're inclined, take off the fuel filter. If it's gunked up, that's the culprit. New Gas tank, line and filter aughta do it.

Get someone to read out the computer to tell you why the Check Engine light is on. That will tell you what the problem is. Or at least what the computer is missing so it can't do its job.

If you are near an Autozone parts store, they will put their scantool on it and give you the error number(s). Use those as the starting point for troubleshooting. Google the error numbers.

If you don't have an Autozone, maybe another parts store has a scantool. If not, maybe a auto shop will do it for free. Maybe the dealer but they usually say the scantool cost them $5,000 so they want $100 to read your car and payoff the tool.

The dealer may have paid $5000 but that device does far more than you need.

Maybe you can find a neighbor or friend that has a scantool. If you have a few cars to maintain and want to do it your self, you can buy one for around $100 or $200 depending on capability.

I built my own using the chip from http://scantool.net .. It needs a computer so I use my PocketPC. A notebook would work also.

Hope this helps
