If you hold your arm up over your head and look at the veins in your hand you will see them almost disappear and then when you hold them down they will get big and fill up with blood! Some people have veins that you can see because there is less fat between the vein and the skin - but all people have veins in there somewhere. Men usually have bigger veins that stick out on their arms than women. I've heard that it is because women have more fat than men. Some people have lots of little veins and some people have fewer bigger veins. When you are exercising or hot your veins will get bigger because that is one way the body cools. If you feel your arm, the skin can feel solid and dense, but when you feel (or palpate) a vein it feels bouncy. That is because veins are made up of elastic connective tissue. That bouncy feel is how people that draw blood (phlebotomists) find a vein - they go by feel rather than appearance.

Some people have varicose veins, which is a condition that makes them "stick out". The valves don't function properly, and blood pools in certain spots instead of flowng freely. This is especially seen in older people, and people who have spent a lot of time on their feet over the years. However, there is a normal variation in how close the veins are to the surface of the skin; that accounts for a lot of differences. Notice on the backs of your hands---those veins often "stand up", because the are very close to the skin there, whereas other veins in your body are buried deeper in the tissue and can't be seen under normal circumstances.

Some people's veins are located closer to the surface of their skin then others'. It's mostly a result of genetics.

veins are hereditary, or also pumping the iron your veins grow as your body needs more blood circulation to keep up with your exercise.

hereditary and other things like blood pressure, how much exercize a person gets, what they eat, if they have a disease or age can contribute to how your veins look.

look at those old folks and look at those body builders..

:D

i like my veins on the outside of my body.

also skin pigment has something to do with it also. i seen some pale folks who legs look like road maps.. yuck!

myself before i took medication for my blood pressure you couldn't see my veins now... since they lowered my blood pressure you can see all kinds of veins buldging out.
