I am almost 38 weeks pregnant. I just saw my doctor yesterday and I have dilated to two… I forgot to ask him, but I have a family get together about 45 minutes from where I’ll be giving birth, do you think it’s a good idea to still go? I also have been having contractions quite often...

The only place you need to be going is the hospital.

Dont mess around with your labor. You may end up having the baby in the car and that would be no fun!

Congratulations though!

Your going 45 min away....its not as if your flying or driving hours and hours. You could go into labor now, next week or even at 41 weeks pregnant. If you are feeling well, then I say go for it. Take your hospital bag with you, find out what hospitals are near to where your going (just in case), keep your medical card handy and enjoy yourself. Once the baby comes, it will be harder to get away. If your contractions are really close together and are getting more uncomfortable, then you could be in labor and traveling is not a good idea. But if it comes and goes and doesnt feel any worse then its Braxton Hicks and your fine. Good Luck with your new bundle of love.

No, it's not safe to travel at this point. Your labour has already begun.....it's in the first stage now. You need to stay as close to your birthing hospital as you can now. Forget the family gathering...the folks will all be visiting you and your gorgeous new baby after the birth. Continue monitoring your contractions. You'll know it's time to get yourself into the hospital when your water bag bursts, or when the contractions become stronger and more regular, roughly 1 in 5.

45 mins - That's not far at all. In some places it could take that long to get to the hospital normally. (assuming that you are DRIVING and NOT flying)

Are you effacing or just dilating?

Being 2 cm doesn't really tell you anything about when you'll go into labor. It could be hours, days or weeks. Or a mom could be closed up tight as a drum and have her baby that night.

Tough call, i was dilated at 2cm, for 1 monh before my doc finally induced me. But i never had contractions either. at 38 weeks, your taking a risk...but a 45 minute drive...i dont know, i grew up i n a small tow, if you were in labor you had to drive 45 minutes to the nearest hospital.... but if i were you, because of the cntractions, i woudlnt do the trip alone, your probably in labor, or your body is getting very ready for it. Good luck!

Probably not a good idea. 45 minutes in a car while in labor could be very uncomfortable. Stay home and get some rest. Once you have the baby, the family reunion will come to you. Good luck.

I stayed dilated to two for about two weeks with my second son. I would only travel with my doctors permission at the point in time. Call him before you make any decision or be prepared to possibly give birth at a different location.

Don't chance it. It wouldn't be nice for your husband to have to deliver your baby in the back of your car. Stay at home where you are comfortable, your family will understand. They can have another get together to celebrate the birth of your baby.

I would have them come to you.... At this stage things could happen so fast that you don't know what to do. And if your having contractions I would not risk it. Your going to have a baby soon they will understand or you all will be gathering at the hospital.

Sounds more like you next trip is to the birthing center not the family get together.
