There is no gay lifestyle just as there is no straight lifestyle. A lifestyle is a way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group.

Gay people are from all walks of life. There is no one style of living. Some are parents, some are career professionals, some are self destructive and some are... well, any other variation of human being.

To call being gay a lifestyle is to reduce a varied group to a single element- who they love and share a life with. I hope you can see why many would find that insulting.

This is a tough one, some people don't take offense, but I think those who do are offended because to say that their sexual preference is a "lifestyle" is to indicate that they made the choice to be homosexual. A lifestyle has nothing to do with your sexual preference, but how you live your life otherwise.

And how are you enjoying your (presumedly) straight "lifestyle?"

Calling the way someone was born and made by God a "lifestyle" is demeaning. It would be like asking you, "How do you enjoy being female?" when this is not something you chose or have any control over. That being said, there are parts of gay/lesbian life (and probably female life, no?) that are better than others.

A person's sexual orientation is a personal matter. It is rude to discuss it unless you know the person very, very well and it is pertinent to the conversation.

There is two reasons why it bothers me:

1) I am an individual, and terms like lifestyle imply that all homos are the same. I have a LOT more in common with a straight Wiccan couple then I do with a gay Christian couple. I have a LOT more in common with a straight white couple then I do with a lesbian black couple. Hell, I have a lot more in common with my straight librarian co-workers then gay construction workers. My daily life bears almost no resemblence to the stereotype of the slutty drugged up young gay male club boy. My life is my own. By refering to it as a "lifestyle" instead of a life, it feels like you're trying to distill me and my life into something you can digest and essentialize. And that makes me feel irritated and uncomfortable. Accept that all homos are different, all individuals. Don't try to make us into what YOU want us to be.

2) The word "lifestyle" is widely used by anti-gay persons. Is it possible that people who love their gay friends and have nothing but support for their gay relatives use the word? Sure, but they should be aware that the word "lifestyle" keeps bad company in the gay community. The best metaphor I can think of is wearing a swastika in a Jewish neighborhood. The swastika was originally an Asian symbol of good luck in battle, but the average Jew is going to assume that someone with a swastika is a neo-Nazi because of it's bad associations.

Totally agree ... it is called alternative lifestyle because it is not what society on the whole considers to be the norm. Not that they are abmornal mind ya, but isn't most everything based on the majority of society?
Most of us our lifestyle is to be with one of the opposite sex, gay community would be alternative lifestyle. Not aware of any that take offense to that. But there is always a radical. =)

Red herring honey, and you know it. In context, when certain people who like to feign innocence on Yahoo Answers use the term "lifestyle" they are doing it in a dismissive way that suggests being gay is MERELY a chosen style of living and not a sexual orientation. But keep it up, your fake exasperation and protestations of innocence are cute.

It's not necessarily offensive - just shows your ignorance. If homosexuality is a lifestyle, so Is hetereosexuality.

Lifestyle? Would that mean that there is a choice...

lifestyle implies there's a choice....it is an orientation. would you call heterosexuality a lifestyle? probably not...it's not a choice. you are who you are...the way you were born.
