a = 2
B = -6
C = -20

=> X = [-B +/- SQUARE ROOT(B^2 -4AC)] / 2A

=> X = [-(-6) +/- SQUARE ROOT((-6)^2 -4(2)(-20))] / 2(2)

=> X = [6 +/- SQUARE ROOT(36 + 160)] / 4

=> X = [6 +/- SQUARE ROOT(196)] / 4

=> X = [6 +/- 14] / 4

=> X = [6 + 14] / 4 OR X = [6 - 14] / 4

=> X = 20 / 4 OR X = -8 / 4

=> X = 5 OR X = -2

x=5 or x=-2

2006-07-26 13:33:30 · answer #2 · answered by sobrangtangatangako 2 · 0 0

2x2-6x-20 =0
dividing both sides by 2

x2 -3x -10 =0

sum of 2 numbers -3 and product = -10 they are -5 and 2

so (x-5)(x+2) =0

so x = 5 or -2

Ok i dont know what a quadratic formula is because i am 13 but here's what i know of it

4-6x-20=0
16-6x=0
+16=+16
6x=16
x=16/6
x=2.6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666667

Using the formula: (-b±√b²-4ac) / 2a

x = 5 and x = -2.

2x^2 - 6x- 20 = 0

x^2 - 3x - 10 = 0

(x-5) (x+2) = 0

now you figure out the rest... bye!

2006-07-26 12:41:52 · answer #6 · answered by ♥michele♥ 7 · 0 0

2x^2 - 6x - 20 = 0

x = (-b ± sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/2a

x = (-(-6) ± sqrt((-6)^2 - 4(2)(-20)))/(2(2))
x = (6 ± sqrt(36 + 160))/4
x = (6 ± sqrt(196))/4
x = (6 ± 14)/4
x = (20/4) or (-8/4)
x = 5 or -2

ANS : 5 or -2

2006-07-26 21:01:08 · answer #7 · answered by Sherman81 6 · 0 0

x = ( -b +- sqrt( b^2 - 4ac ) ) / 2a
   = ( -(-6) +- sqrt( (-6)^2 - 4(2)(-20) ) ) / 2(2)
   = ( 6 +- sqrt( 36 + 160 ) ) / 4
   = ( 6 +- 14 ) / 4

x = 5
x = -2

a=2, b=-6, and c=-20.
x=[-b +- sqrt(b^2 -4ac)]/2a
Now plug in. You can do the square root exactly to get your two roots.
