Is america slipping further and further back to the dark ages?

Question

Washington just struck down a law making it legal for same sex marriage. How much further down the road to ruin will the US go before it self destructs?
I mean honestly, what's next? Denying the vote to Blacks and Women? How about making interracial marriage illegal again?
Honestly, if some people think it's acceptable to deny a basic civil right to a certian segment of the population, why not others?
(oh and for those of you who don't understand that marriage is a civil right, let me educate you; Marriage is a LEGAL institution, not a religious one. Want proof? Try to get married in a church without the legal paperwork. You can't. Now get married by a justice of the peace at city hall without any mention of a magic sky-pixie. No problem at all. See how that works? Good).

It is not self destructing at all, it is honoring and upholding the institution of marriage between a man and a woman..

If you see like this. But sens of marriage does not depend on govenment or church, even if many disagree. Sens of marriage is based on natural rights and is done in favour of society . Imagine, if people live together but not marry what about their families? Should they know each other or rather no because may be next year there will be a change? How should they get know each other if there shall be no marriage ceremony? After marriage two people living together means two families working together. It is good for children if any come. Without marriage the couple is simply socially weaker. And now look at the sense of gay marrage. Would it be really any sense hoping for new, bigger social organism joined by families like that. The sense of cooperation is new generation. And how about children - two man is a strong team but are they heading to rise a children? Let's be honest - unhappy children. I think such a couple no need special backup, they can do themselves and there is few things to stop them from braking in two. So in social dimension their marriage is pointless. And other dimensions are too meaningless to start changing low and tradition for them, which may be more problematic than anyone expects.

I don't think America is slipping backwards as much as change in civil rights takes more than just a few decades.

For example, the women's right to vote was first publicly discussed (by Elizabeth Cady Stanton) in the 1840s. Took almost 90 years for the law to pass, with lot's of religious discussions along the way as to what God intended women's natural purpose to be and why they should not be allowed to vote.

Interracial marriage took a couple hundred years to become allowed by law.

Don't worry, it takes TIME to overcome Conservatism. Denmark didn't legalize gay marriage until the early 1980s, and remember it's in a part of the world where civilization has existed for thousands of years. The USA is like a small child still in trial and error, but the rule of thumb is liberalism always prevails with time. I guarantee in less than 50 years we'll see a big change.

Yoda, you are one of the most sane people on here. I don't get to answer a lot of your questions but you've answered many of mine very well. I'll take a stab at yours. First, I totally agree with you. It makes no sense. Marriage is indeed a civil right, and seperation of church and state is very much so not happening. Perhaps the government is not interfering with churches every day activities but they are affecting them in roundabout ways such as supprting their choice of not allowing same sex marriages. Not to mention that even with seperation of church and state schools are still saying the damn pledge of allegiance, celebrating Christmas time, and so on. The government can say they're founded on that as an element but they are SOOO wrong. There is so many biased laws and things going on that support religious point of views over everyone else's. So much so that it is to the point that they are enforcing that point of view on us, for example, your same sex marriage example.

I fear for this country. It is eating itself from within, and unfortunately, religion is a cancer causing it.

The reality is that SSM will eventually become the law of the land in the US, and people will look back and wonder what the fuss was all about.
