I've seen so many Oprah shows and read so many articles about the drug and how it really is taking over the country and in particular young teens. I wonder how this has happened because from all the cases I have heard about, this kids start off doing it at 13 years old.
What does it do to you? Have any of you ever done it and if you have, why? I mean its hard for me to understand, because here in NYC, I dont know ANYBODY who has done crystal meth and I do know quite alot of people. Even my druggie friends dont touch it. Why is it soooooooooo popular now these days, especially in like the Midwest I've noticed..
just wondering.

yeah alot of people do the adderal here and alot of cocaine, but in the city teens stick mostly to weed and coke and occasionally herion which i guess is worse, but even the my most addictive friends are somewhat responsible with their usage, so this is shocking.

crystal meth started in the mid west and south. it used to be known as 'hillbilly heroin'. it was a drug of the poor. (actual heroin was/is considered a glam drug) the labs are usually in isolated areas because the synthesis of the chemicals produces quite a stench that is easily recognizable by anybody who knows what they're looking for (like law enforcement). it's not something you can make in an apartment without getting caught easily. so it started and flourished in basements in small towns. then celebrities caught onto it and meth spread into big cities.
it still is manufactured primarily in small towns, though. from people i've talked to it's very easy to make and if you don't know how you just pour a bunch of household chemicals into a beaker and heat it and hope it doesn't explode or you die from the poison gas it produces. it's cheap to manufacture and you can sell it for a massive profit.
the link below is to a good wiki on meth

It isn't taking over our country. The increase in meth use is a fad. Every decade has its drug of choice.
Meth is definitely hurting us, as Her Majesty noted on several shows, and the reasons for the proliferation were adequately addressed by other answers. However, the vast majority of us are not using methamphetamine.
Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to socially discipline those who make a lifestyle choice of using drugs. "Tough love" is the way to go. Hard-core preaching on the subject of addictions may also help win over the Christians. The non-religious may need a little more convincing.

I also don't know of anyone who has used it. Is it in fact taking over the country or is it just media hype?
An interesting book to read is "The Culture of Fear: Why Americans are afraid of all the wrong things". It's written by a sociology professor and he discusses the various things that we are afraid of such as airplane crashes, school violence, e:Coli, etc. and analyzes whether the statistics back up those fears. In most cases the numbers don't warrant the fear - instead it is the result of fear-mongering by the media and the government leaders. Additionally, there are other things that we should be legitimately concerned about, but because they are more complex the media doesn't cover them, and because they are not politically beneficial to discuss politicians don't touch them.

I live right next to the highest use of meth in the Kansas Counties, it is around school a lot, it seems to be an easy drug for people to get sucked into, in the midwest "Such as Kansas" there really isn't much here, and that could easily be a reason ppl are sucked into it, most people that are sucked into it are just wanting to get away from their normal life

Crystal Methanphetamine or Meth as it's commonly refered to has become popularized because of the simple ingredients it requires to "make it". Propane (found abuntanly in rural areas because houses are not on a gas line, or city water) draino, bleach and some other things. Cooked in the correct fashion gives you Meth. Fat housewives have used it to attempt to become thin and teens who have idolized hollywood models and actresses want to be thin as well. Men and boys with poor coping skills, especially those who can not find work (thank you Mr. George and canadian governor of Michigan Jennifer Granholm for giving away our factory jobs) turn to Meth as an escape from reality, and even as a sweet road to suicide. Meth users often are in dispair, but do not want to blow their heads off, or hang themselves. They know very well that they are committing suicide.

It's cheap, easy and relatively quick to manufacture; it can be made out of pretty much anything found in medicine cabinets, under the sink, or in the pantry. It's a mood-enhancing drug, really. You can smoke it, snort it, inject it. (Oral, nasal, intravenous)
It gives a buzz, you can hallucinate a bit, but you can also experience hypothermia, it kicks up BP (blood pressure) and heart rate, insomnia, loss of appetite, breathlessness, sudden bursts of energy, irritability, confusion, fatigue, vertigo, tremors/convulsions....
I personally have never done meth, nor has anyone I know of. I think all the cases we see and hear about are sensationalized and embellished, but that's just my opinion.
Good luck with your inquiry!

It's cheap and accessible. It's also so addicting that even from your first try you're addicted. Last month I heard on TV that if you move into a house where meth is made then you can have ill side effects from the environment of your home. You dont have to be a rocket scientist to make it. Rednecks here in tenn even have 'mobile meth labs' which mean they make it in their crappy cars. it is a horrible thing to do not only to yourself but also to your loved ones.

its a mind thing, if it wasn't meth they would be on something else. People quit because they have to or want to quit. I have experimented and it was sensational, i stayed up for 4 days straight. Then i stopped after a month and never looked back. I just walked away with a great memory from using it.

quickly addictive. The ingredients are things you can buy at a
local store.

It is popular in rural areas because people can easily get the ingredients to make it at home and sell it for major profit. Whereas in the city, drugs are imported and sold for major profit.
