The obvious pro of course is that it is free. Other pro is that you get to meet the most weird and wonderful people and end up with some very interesting stories to tell about your travels, much more so than taking the normal method of bus/train. Cons pretty obvious too - you never know just who you're gonna meet and they may turn out to be a little weirder than you would want, plus you can end up standing forever sometimes waiting for a lift that never arrives while everyone in their cars are laughing at you cos you look like a bit of a ****.

The Pros: It's cheap.
The Cons: It's alot of work finding someone (let alone someone going the way you want to go), You could be raped, You could be killed, You are at the will of the driver, and you have no control over where you are going.

Roger Waters from Pink Floyd, with a very sexy picture of a naked female hitchhiker on the cover.
your questions are too obtuse so what do you expect when you get stoopid or really specific answers.....

pro's - cheap, get to meet a lot of people, stops you getting obsessed with the plans, brings all manner of adventure
cons - can't plan really when to get anywhere, possible risks of wierdos or worse,
I went hh with a tent and a friend around the US for 3 months. total blast, met loads of interesting people, went to a pow wow, shown around gettysburg, put up for the night loads of times, met people's families, went places we would otherwise never have gone, and never had any troubles..

i hitch-hiked twice in my life, with a friend, when i was much younger. the first time a guy in a hurse picked us up. he ended up being very nice and there was no casket in the car, but it was still pretty scary. the second time my mother drove by us in a cab on her way to work, yes she saw me and i was in trouble. never again.
