Just trying to save money while on my San Diego vacation next month... Buying food at the zoo sounds expensive...

I wonder if I can bring my own cooler of food.... Also, are there lockers or someplace I can keep the food?

Any other San Diego advice is appreciated. :) Thanks y'all.
(And, yes, I really do come back and read the answers.)

Pack up the cooler with your sandwiches sodas and lots of ice but leave it in the trunk. After a while at the zoo you'll want to take a break. The parking is free at the Zoo and it's really easy to get in and out. But also if you want to get sandwiches first and keep them in the cooler then go to the car get the cooler you will have the most beautiful park in the world to have a picnic in! Bring a blanket and enjoy Balboa Park. You can walk the park from the Zoo and there's plenty of places to have a picnic. I wouldn't do the Zoo any other way if it were my vacation, everything does add up $$ if you buy from the Zoo If you're at Balboa Park on a Wednesday there's this huge Organ Pavillion in Balboa where they have family concerts, you're kids will like it, really. Also at Balboa, there's an IMAX theatre so if you're exhausted, take the kids there, it's air conditioned you can crash in your seat and they will love the movie! You mentioned Subway so I threw in the addresses and phone #'s for all Subways in 5 mile radius!!! I love San Diego, I've lived in LA and San Francisco and nothing is better. Email me if you want more ideas.

There are plenty of passions to pursue in San Diego and that hotelbye is the spot to start finds what San Diego must offer. In the San Diego holiday you will stage outside of one's safe place and you'll investigate new activities while you're here and you may only discover that discovering a fresh search is an experience in itself. One of the areas should see from San Diego is Balboa Park. That park has over a 1400 acre and here you will find historical structures, numerous museums, gardens, and natural space. The park was designed for the Panama California Exhibition of 1915-1916. The predominant architecture is Spanish-Mexican style, minimal level buildings that merge with the natural surroundings. Among the shows of the park are the Botanical Gardens and lily pool, the Museum of Man, the Museum of Natural History, the San Diego Museum of Art, and the popular San Diego Zoo. Even though you never get into a making the park is merely a lovely place.

The food at the San Diego Zoo does cost a bit more than the food might cost at an outside restaurant or shop. But you can bring food and drink into the zoo. As Rosevallie mentioned, disposable drinking straws and throwaway lids are a no-no - as are glass bottles. So bring your beverages in plastic bottles or aluminum cans.

There are lockers at the Zoo, according to the zoo website: http://www.sandiegozoo.org/zoo/guest.html
Coin-operated lockers are available to guests on grounds behind the Reptile House, near Wegeforth Bowl. (go left from the Zoo entrance).

If you are bringing the family or a large party to the zoo, check out getting a membership - since you get free guest passes with memberships, it might be actually cheaper in some situations, and the member can return to the zoo all you want.

We went to San Diego Zoo a few years back. We didn't bring our cooler, but everyone had a backpack. We had water bottles and sandwiches in our backpacks, and it was okay back then. I don't know about now. The rule might change, they might search your bags, but I hope you still can bring your own lunches. Have you check out their web site? Maybe they post the rules there. Hope you will have a wonderful trip to San Diego.

I just love the city.

Im not sure if they allow food to be brought in or not because of
the danger of stuff getting into the animal cages (for example I know Drinking straws are banned) They do have coin operated lockers though. and The balboa park next door is a great place to picnic

note on tickets the guided bus tour is only good if you don't plan to walk around and read the signs in front of the exhibits.
the other bus ticket is a must if you dont think you are up to walking up and down the hills all day.
it goes everywhere the guided bus goes but you can get on and off all day

I would think yes. My strategy is, if they say no, I say that I keep kosher and can't eat the food inside the park. Good luck. Enjoy your vacation.

You can bring food to the ballpark, but you cannot bring any drinks to the ballpark except for a small water bottle (unopend).
