If you are opening a bricks and mortar business then your best bet would be to contact the small business administration locally. They can advise you on getting a license, financing as well as taxing issues.

If you are thinking about an on-line business, think long and hard about it. It is true that information is what most people search for.

If you have products to sell, unless you make them yourself and they are unique, you can bet there are thousands already doing it.

Paying for and setting up an on-line web site is truly the easy part. The real cost comes from trying to get people to your site.
Sense I don't know where your headed I will leave it at that.

Just know this. No matter what you are going to do prepare yourself for a lot of work. Being in business for yourself can be invigorating and challenging but it takes continual work to make a success out of it. And while the start up cost for an on-line business can be much less the on-going cost is not cheap. It takes on average about 2 to 3 years to get your site high enough on the search engines to do you any good. And that is only if you know what you are doing. You can pay for placement but it will cost you....

I wish you luck.

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* How to Really Start Your Own Business, Fourth Edition by David E. Gumpert
* How to Really Create a Successful Business Plan: Step-by-Step Guide by David E. Gumpert
* What No One Ever Tells You about Starting Your Own Business: Real-Life Start-Up Advice from 101 Successful Entrepreneurs (What No One Ever Tells You About Starting Your Own Business) by Jan Norman
* Business Start-Up Kit by Steven D. Strauss
* Start Your Own Business (Entrepreneur Magazine's Start Up) by Rieva Lesonsky

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Compared to offline businesses, the investment required to start an online business is minimal. A popular way of earning money on the internet is by providing information and services. This can be monetised by advertising or charging a subscription. You can also make money online by selling products on auction websites like eBay or through your own website. My parents opened a bussiness a long time ago. Just remember if it goes under- you can to! Also you have to keep in mind youll have to get loans for starting it up and submitting a bussiness plan to the bank plus keep in mind overhead costs, employees, building rent, signs store fixtures, cost of materials, cleaning electric water, building safety codes, business license, also getting it incorperated. etc etc etc. Theirs so much you need to know that its a ton, I recommend going to your local libary or bookstore, theirs lots of books out their on opening your own bussiness.
