What's the world population of whales and how many die per year?

Just curious, when you see a beached whale it's a big deal. Also, seeing them floating "belly up" would be intriguing if 100s died each day.

You'd have to check and see how many Japan and Norway kill annually. However, I beleive the whales have made a great comeback. I'm a flier, not a sailor, so I don't know.
