Snakes love cool, damp, shady places to hide. So a lot of overgrown plants make an ideal home. Keeping plants trimmed and using your weed-eater to tidy up helps a lot. They also prefer to live (at least in our area) near a water source such as a stream or creek. *If you don't have any children or pets in your yard, you might try scattering moth balls around problem areas-it seems to repell them. Moth balls are toxic though, so be careful.

Dampness, darkness, and coolness attract snakes. If your ground is wet that could be part of the problem, especially if it is shaded ground.
