Get some experience on the Pub rock scene, then cut a demo to sell. Honestly at 38, you will not get a record company to sign you as they have to spend a fortune promoting, and they can get a naive group of people to sign silly deals, work them to exhaustion, then drop them before the band start to earn anything. My band sold 500 records last year through our own record company, meaning we got 100% of the profits. what we earnt through that was the equivelent of selling 50000 copies through a named record label, which nowadays is a huge number!
Dont wait for success create it.

My best advice is get out there and share your music with people.

If you're any good you will be noticed.
