I know its a bit morbid, and if I had any relatives that had any money, I still couldn't do it, but the thought crossed my mind when watching the news of a women who killed her husband.

If the person is convicted does the government take the inheritance. If they get 30 years in prison, do they get the money before of after they are released?

If the person is found guilty of killing another person, the killer can not inherit from the estate of the murder victim. The assets will pass down to the other heirs.

You state "if someone is the sole heir". Distant cousins can become the heirs in that case. If none are found, then the estate goes to the state.

If they are convicted then no, they wouldn't get the money. Most inheritance contracts include death by the heir as being a breech of contract.

The money would then go to the next closest family member.

So key here is....don't get caught!

the only people who've a say are the those that it became left interior the inheritance. No spouses, infants, buddies, kin, and so on have a say. the only subject is that if the persons spouse talks him into merchandising the residing house then of course it is going to become his determination.

Virtually every state has a law that says that a murderer cannot profit from the crime. The laws very from state to state. For example, some states say if it is intentional homicide, others reckless homicide. So, it goes further than an insurance contract exclusion, you cannot recover an inheritance if you kill someone.
