The GTO was originally a Ferrari model, if memory serves they made 39 of them and are now worth millions. The name means Gran Turismo Omologato.
General Motors had a edict against putting any engine larger than 330 C.I.D. into their A body cars. John Z. Delorean convinced Pontiac's General Manager to sell 1964 Tempests with an available GTO options package, (among other things!) a standard 4 barrel (Carter AFB), 335 HP 389 C.I.D. engine, bucket seats plus all other Le Mans options, they "forgot" to mention anything about the new options package to GM top brass. By the time top brass was aware of it, it was too late to stop.
Modern GTOs are made by GMs Holden division in Australia.

No. Mitsubishi had a car called the GTO in Japan that was the same as the 3000GT. As mentioned above, Ferrari also had several cars called the GTO. The most famous one was the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. It is considered one of the most beautiful cars of all time. (do a yahoo image search, these cars are gorgeous)

In the slightly older 'GTO' series, if it doesn't have a 'Prancing Horse' logo ( that's a Ferrari GTO ), it's a Pontiac.
However, the newest 'GTO's are built 'down under' in Australia. The only difference is the 'logo', sound system and maybe a few other amenities.
I have forgotten the actual name / logo that is on the 'down under' GTO, that about sums it up.

Yes, all American GTOs are/were made by Pontiac.
There may be other companies that make a car called a GTO but it is not the same as the American "goat"
