Some teams like the Yankees and Cubs don’t have names on the back of their jerseys because of tradition. But a couple of years back Joe Paterno ask his players if they wanted to have their names on the back of the jerseys and the team’s captain at the time said, “the name on the front is all that matters”. So some teams do it to be know as a TEAM and not as individuals.

Some teams don't have names on the back of their jerseys because they want the focus on the team and not on the individual player. It's a team effort so the team is more important than the individual.

Some teams don't have the names on the back of their jerseys because it is a tradition. the Wisconsin Badgers are known for not having names on their basketball jerseys. Also, if no names are imprinted on jerseys, schools won't have to buy new ones each year.

whoever says its because the team can't afford it is a moron. any team can afford to put a name on their jerseys. its all about tradition. have you ever noticed that the teams without names on the back are some of the oldest franchises in the league. its just the way its been for nearly a century for those teams.

it's from tradition...some teams don't have names on the back because back in the day no-one had names on the back of their jerseys and when they started putting them on, it was just on the away jerseys for visiting fans to know who the other team was...that's why older teams like the Yankees and Red Sox don't have names on their home jerseys...as for newer teams...they just want a traditional style...hope this helped.

If you are talking about teams in a youth league, it is probably because they don't have the money to get names put on the jerseys, but if you are talking about the majors it is more likely team administration preferences.

Most of the time it's because they go thru SO many different players, they don't want to go thru the expense of putting the names on and then have to take them off again when they trade the player.
