Do I wait until after the party or open the gifts at the party with the guests present?

Open the gifts from the guests only while they are present. Other gifts can be open at a later time. This allows you to thank the guest for the gift at once. A thank you card later is also in order.

Help the child open the gifts with the guests present. Everybody usually enjoys watching a child's reaction to a gift they've bought. A one-yr-old is still pretty little to really get much out of a birthday party, though. Many people make the mistake (in my opinion, that is) of having way too elaborate a party for a child that age. You will remember the party, of course, but the child most likely will not. So if you haven't had the party yet, consider why you feel the need to do a really big, fancy one with a lot of people (assuming that is what you have in mind). Small ones with just a minimum of friends and family can be just as meaningful, if not more so!!
