Hi there,

Firstly I would avoid AVG, Spybot and Ad-aware like the plague. People who recommend such programs really must have no idea how many pieces of malware are sailing straight through onto their machines. In one of the latest reports I witnessed, AVG only managed a 20% protection rate, with Spybot and Ad-aware scoring below 8%. These are free for a reason people!!!

I work in the PC security industry and from the latest tests I would recommend Prevx1 which currently has the strongest protection and removal capabilities of any PC security program currently available.

They offer a free trial which will scan your computer and remove all infections completely free of charge, or you can even buy the product for a year for as little as $20:

>> ADDED LATER <<
In response to Rachelle T below me - I would love for you to go ahead and download the free trial of prevx1 (link above) and just let it scan your computer to see what it finds (there is no obligation to buy it and can be instantly uninstalled if you do not wish to keep it).

The only reason I ask you to do this is to open your eyes on what poor security you have on your PC - I installed Prevx1 on a computer a couple of weeks ago which had AVG, ad-aware and spybot active and up-to-date - yet Prevx1 still went on to detect and remove over 30 malware infections. These infections weren't harmless tracking cookies or anything like that either, but very threatening trojans and rootkits that can steal your bank details and send various other private data to their sources.

You may think you're safe (and I don't mean to be patronising) but you really don't know what you're talking about. Sorry..

Free off the internet direct from the manfacturer.
Nothing protects from all Malware unless you purchase a package that will replace the following listed software.

I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)

The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version

AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

Use AVG antivrus (free for home use) and go to www.trendmicro.com for a free check every now and then (it also cleans up as well for free, unlike a lot of other so called free checks which just try to get you t obuy their software). Use www.download.com to search for others and check out what users say. There is a whole section on security and spyware tools.

Make sure you're using a firewall too.

Ignore the answerer right above me. I've been using AVG for who knows how long, and my computer's been running fine and dandy ever since I got it. It's caught viruses when they come (rarely happens, but at least it does its job), and it hasn't disrupted my computer's performance in any way. Considering how many programs, files, and other media I've downloaded, it's a wonder my computer isn't fried already, and I owe it all thanks to AVG free edition. Mind you, if you're willing to actually pay for the full version of AVG, I'd recommend that even more. So yeah... that's just my little defence of AVG. =)

AVG Free is the best free antivirus you can get. Spybot, search and destroy is also good, and ad aware is good, if you want to spend some money e-trust is the best firewall, antivirus, spyware and adware thing you can buy. Just type them in on google

If it is only for home use (no business) AVG free edition would be my choice.
