Montreal Canadiens of course. They've won 24 Stanley Cups.
24 Stanley Cups - 1916 (NHA), 1924 (NHL), 1930 (NHL), 1931 (NHL), 1944 (NHL), 1946 (NHL), 1953 (NHL), 1956 (NHL), 1957 (NHL), 1958 (NHL), 1959 (NHL), 1960 (NHL), 1965 (NHL), 1966 (NHL), 1968 (NHL), 1969 (NHL), 1971 (NHL), 1973 (NHL), 1976 (NHL), 1977 (NHL), 1978 (NHL), 1979 (NHL), 1986 (NHL), 1993 (NHL)
76 Playoff appearances - 1916, 1918, 1919, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2004, 2006

They've won more Stanley Cups than all of the Canadian teams combined and they've got the biggest stadium which is always a sell out.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Buffalo Sabres. Yes, the Hurricanes won the cup, and the playoff format is adjusted accordingly. However, it took the Hurricanes seven games (really difficult games for them) to defeat a Sabres team that was decimated by injuries. Never before in my life have I used injuries as an excuse, but it is the only reason the Sabres lost. Five out of the top six defensemen, which results in two and a half lines out of three, were injured.
Will they repeat their status as the best team next year? I don't know, with free agency and arbitration and everything, but I do know that the Sabres are such a hard working team, and deserve some credit for the excellent job they did this year.

The answer would have to be the Carolina Hurricanes, your 2005-2006 Stanley Cup Champions. They took this title through great effort, perseverence, and strategy. Strong coaching, goaltending (despite a rookie in net most games), and leadership on the ice were three big factors.

Fortunately, I picked them ahead of time and my prediction came true. Once they defeated New Jersey on their way to the conference finals, I knew their chances had improved. The Devils are always a tough playoff foe for just about anybody in the East. I had a strong sense the finals would not be a difficult challenge and even though the series went to the 7th game, it still seemed to never be in "great" doubt.

For the record, I am a Los Angeles Kings fan so do not consider much bias in my answer :-] The Hurricanes are not my favorite team at all.

Just as an "fyi", the question should be "What is the best hockey team?" or "Whose is the best hockey team?" If you are wondering "who has" the best hockey team.

If you're asking what is the best team, I would have to go with the Carolina Hurricanes as they just won the Stanley Cup - they are, for now, the team to beat.

If you are asking who has the best team, I am entirely biased and would say that New York Rangers. They were swept in the first round of the playoffs, but played with heart and character all season long.

Carolina Hurricanes are the NHL's best team. It's comical to read all of these Buffalo Sabres fans claiming they are the best and "should" have won. Championship teams answer the bell. Buffalo had a lead in Game 7 of the ECF and couldn't close out. It was Carolina that played like a champion, not Buffalo.

i think the Anaheim Ducks because they kicked butt this season and they played great in the 1st round against the Flames AND they swept the Avs in the 2nd round. They should have beat the Oilers but they had a really long break after they swept the Avs and they lost their momentum. But they could have won the Stanley Cup if it werent for that long break. During the Playoffs, the Duck broke 6 rookie records!!! the Ducks are gonna win the cup in 07

well looking at the history of the NHL dating way back to the early fourties and thirty's that the Montreal Candiens are they have won 24 Stanley Cups that is the most in two sports ( the other being the New york Yankees) the Canadiens have had the greatest goaltenders and forwards in the NHL
P.S i am a Vancouver Canucks fan but the candiens are the best team in NHL history

the best team would probably have to be the Colorado Avalanche, they have had some of the best playing together teams in a long time. The detroit Redwings are also a very talented team. I myself am from St. Louis, who prior to this past year have had the longest running playoff streak of any team in any sport. But they were terrible this past year. but they should be better this year
