Yes, you need to have a TV license even if all you watch is Sky or Cable rather than terrestrial TV or even BBC channels. It's very irritating for people with Sky and even those without Sky as there wouldn't be a need for the licence if the stupid BBC aired adverts to pay their way. It's not even as if there is anything worth watching on the BBC anyway.

Yes you need a licence.
To the person who said that the TV licence is also for radio, and possibly broadband in the future, I'd really like to know where you got that info from because nowhere on my TV licence does it mention "radio".

It is considered a tax.
(Why do people still think they are paying for the BBC?)
The TV licence is demanded by a government department. The £3.5 BILLION the revenue it brings in is not demanded by the BBC. Check your TV licence.
-'WHAT YOU NEED A TV LICENCE FOR.
You need a TV Licence to install or use ANY equipment to receive or record television programmes, including a television, video recorder, satellite, PC card, TV enabled PC or any other TV receiving equipment.'-
There is NO wording that states you are paying a fee to the BBC.

So long as you have any electrical device capable of receiving TV signals you have to pay a licence. This even applies to the latest computers.

Yes, you need a licence if you have anything that will pick up the signal. A TV, video, DVB, satellite decoder, DVB stick for your computer, TV card in your computer or any other type of tuner working or not.....

hi It only might want to be that the cable from the dish might want to have a loose or poorly made off connection the plugs on a sat gadget are F sort which makes use of the inner center of the cable as component to the conection to the sat receiver this may be loose or only dirty. the television might want to be a similar difficulty, the interior center on the coax to the plug must be soldered, 8 cases out of 10 the interior is only a friction fit. earlier paying out sturdy money verify this out. once you've a socket for both gadget make confident the cable is linked sturdy and tight. best of success Regards John

Also, if you are in somebody else's property when they are not there (say, babysitting) and you are watching their TV, you can be liable for the licence., and maybe a fine.
