The original American dream is to build your own homestead and live a life of liberty and the pursuit of happiness with you in control of your destiny.
The problem is that it still takes an effort to build a home and work for happiness, but many Americans think its inherited to them and they can be lazy and not earn anything.
No, the dream is the freedom to pursue your happiness in liberty for all.

When I was growing up in the 50s and 60s, the American Dream was pretty simple. Young people aspired to having a family and owning a home. That's it. Now days, I'm not sure there is an American Dream. What my daughter wants depends on what time of day it is. A lot of her friends don't dream beyond scraping together enough money for pizza tonight. Try to find some consistency in your other answers. It's kinda sad.

The "American Dream" is a term coined here in the US, but is no different than any other countries dreams. It was brought about as many immigrants were wanting the "American Dream" of being able to find work, give it your all, and prosper from that hard work.
The "American Dream" lives on today and is what makes this and many other countries great. Anyone can achieve anything they want if they give it their all.
In essence, it's simple...every one of us on this planet wish to be allowed to have the freedoms to choose our own paths to our conceived happiness. Many times it's materialistic things, other times it's the freedom of speech or freedom of choice.
The one persons opinion that the US is an oil dominating bully is in no way the reflection of it's people. We, just like you, have fools that get elected to office that end up bidding their own agendas at the peoples expense.

I believe it is the opportunity to...
live happily without government oppression. This includes:
1. Practice the religion of your choice.
2. Make a living doing what you wish.
3. Obtain skills or education in anything you want.
4. Speak what you believe.
5. Travel where you want.
6. Work as much or as little as you want.
7. Elect your leaders.
8. And much much more.
I think in a nutshell, its the opportunity to be whoever you are or want to be without restriction or government oppression. This freedom manifests itself in a cultural sense of confidence, hope, happiness, and motivation to try harder at just about anything to an extent greater than I have found anywhere else.
Of course, as in any civilized society, we live under the rule of law. It is a never-ending battle between laws vs. freedoms, as well as federal (national) laws vs. state's rights.
And make no illusion...this opportunity is also the opportunity to fail...and many do. We have homeless, and our prisons are full. Still, the underlying mantra is "Work hard, and you will reap what you sow."

To weigh as much as a small whale and have to be lifted from a hole in the side of their apartment by a crane.
To have to be surgically parted from the sofa. And to then have the rest of the world tell them how great they are, and ask them to come and run things because they are so good at creating exciting, dynamic, vibrant communities.
