I think true friendships are rare because it requires a profound commitment to another person... you are the one that walks them through the darkest hours of their lives... you usually take the brunt of their bad moods... but you love them flaws and all and accept them for the person they are... not who you want them to be.... and today most people are so self-centered they can't love someone else so totally and without restriction... they aren't willing to give of themselves enough to cement that kind of friendship... you have to accept and love yourself before you can be true to anyone else.

Because we sit here at a computer answering questions from total strangers and forge a sense of community. Face to face contact is required for a true friend and also requires getting to know someone which takes time. Too many people don't make time to get together with friends and therefore end up on an on-line answer site for comfort. We are all so lonely :(

I was really good friends with my neighbor who was alot younger than me. Went for walks together every night. I kind of took her under my wing. She was always needing money and a babysitter. I took her on a trip to Seattle and asked her to only pay me back the amount for the plane ticket. I paid all other expenses, even the food. I also sold her my old computer and only asked that she pay me a little every month until she pay me back. I gave her gas money all the time, money for diapers for her baby. Our friendship ended because she refused to pay me a penny. I got sick of asking her for it. That was 4 years ago and we havent talked for about 2 years now. My point.... Friends take advantage of friends that would give them the shirt off their backs. That is why there are not true friendships these days.

Because a lot of people are in things for themselves anymore. It's always about themself before others. And most people have probably been hurt too bad in the past, to open themselves up to anyone because they're afraid they'll get hurt again.

I think because people tend to rely too much on technology. Most people sit on the computer instead of socializing. I also think with the advance of cell phones, text messaging has replaced the old fashioned phone call. My advice? call people instead of texting them or chatting onlne!

Because people are self centered, selfish and self absorbed. They are only looking out for themselves and rarely think about others' needs and wants above their own.
