Definitely, anything that warms up the muscles during pre-game stretching helps.
Many social footballers, who play the odd game, do not do enough stretching or warm up the muscles, tendons and ligaments. They just rush onto the fields and courts and play. It's ok when you're in your teens but when age catches up, all these 'sports injuries' start to prop up.

Besides the massage balms, after game massages are good too.
