If those are the only two fish in the tank, it means trouble.

Look at the fish and see if you see white spots, or white film, the first is Ick, the second fungus.

Most likely there is a problem with the water. Fish will sit at the bottom of the tank when the ph is off or there is high ammonia level. high ammonia is very, very common with goldfish, they are dirty fish (in terms of waste) and actually secrete ammonia into the water (they have a slime that releases ammonia).

I would recommend immediately changing half the water inthe tank, the n take acup out of the tank and bring ti to your local petstore and ask them to test it for you. If they are any good custoemr wise, they will do it without question.

Remember to declorinate the water before you put it in the tank!

If you have other fish in the tank that are not exhibiting this behavior, do not worry about changing the water yet, but still get it tested

I had a Beta for several years, and he had a glass mermaid statue in his tank, and he would cuddle up against her. I joked that he loved her, but I think they may do it because it makes them feel more secure when they sleep, like a survival instinct.

do they have black spots on their tails and rear ends? if so, they have a fish disease. do they stay in a corner always and never come out? that is another likely sign of the same illness. please take them to a pet store and ask them how to treat it or a good aquatics vet, i realy dont know much about this disease, as my fish were jus introduced to it the day after i bought them, 3 days later, they died, ohwell, that will teach me to buy something from a bad-rep pet store again.

Oo''

Actually, this most likely means they're sick. I'd do a fungal treatment and test your water.
