Hi there,

I work in the PC security industry and there has been a growing trend over the last 6-12 months of a new type of malware (virii, trojans, rootkits, etc) which is becoming increasingly difficult for a number of the big players (Norton, McAfee, etc) to remove. This is basically down to the fact that their method of protecting their usebase is fundamentally flawed.

All these forms of protection work on signatures which means a new piece of malware first has to be caught, studied and then a fix manually created by one of thousands of researchers they employ. This type of protection is dying in front of our eyes.

I would recommend a program (which I have no affiliation with) called Prevx1. This relies on a completely new method of protecting their userbase, based on behaviour and something called "Community Intrusion Protection". This means that if one user of the entire Prevx userbase is infected with a piece of malware - Prevx makes this known to the community database, which in turn then immediately protects every single Prevx user from then being infected with that malware again without the need to download any signatures or updates! Prevx really is seeing malware earlier than anyone else, and managing to protect their userbase in minutes - not the hours, days or weeks than all other security programs manage. It really is an amazing process which means they are protecting their users from more malware than any other PC security program.

Plus - it's not just great at protecting you - it has recently been reported to posess the strongest removal capabilities of any security vendor - so is a great fix for computers that are absolutely inundated with malware. I recently installed this on a computer that could barely start-up, and within a few hours it was back up-and-running like new. Fantastic.

This is one I would definitely recommend:

Viruses are constantly becoming more complex, exploitive, and disruptive. The answer to dealing with them really comes down to a few basic things - once you have a clean computer, having a solid router w/ NAT, using a decent Firewall program, a cleaner (such as Ad-Aware), and careful web browsing/downloading can keep your system running smoothly. Shutting off Javascript, cookies, etc whenever your on sites you don't 100% trust is important.

If your system is acting up pretty badly, I'd say wipe and start clean. Do regular backups of important information, pictures, save files so whenever it comes down to starting fresh, a few hours spent reinstalling is all you lose.

Answer is yes.

But you can improve the situation:

-- Stop clicking on everything (emails and websites). It may say 'jokes' or 'funny video', but the joke will oftne be on you.

-- Switch to Firefox or Opera. Do NOT get an ActiveX plugin for it (activex is a major virus installation vector).

-- Disable Java (enable only on a site by site basis)

-- Use Thunderbird (or even Outlook) for email, not Outlook Express Virus Installer.

-- Assume every email involving money and identity (banks, ebay, paypal) is bogus and delete them. You will be right 100% of the time.

I strongly believe it's the same people who write anti virus programs who are making the viruses in the first place. Haven't you noticed that as soon as there is a new virus, you will immediately find an anti-virus program to zap it?
