Opera 9 is an amazing piece of browser software, bundled with loads of features that will never make it into IE (mainly because people who use IE don't need anything other than the basics).
More importantly is its stability, I have yet to witness ANY version of Opera (apart from one very, very early beta version) crash, whereas I see IE crash all the time (at Uni etc).
Finally, because it's not as popular as IE, it's less prone to attacks from hackers and script kiddies.

Its not difficult to beat IE, its the most insecure browser because of Active X on by default, and because it is so integrated with Windows Explorer which is a security issue. Its also the browser that conforms least to web standards laid down by the W3 group.
But I prefer Firefox for everyday browsing, I don't need all the settings pre-installed and like the fact that I can install plug ins and switch them off when they're not needed.
It's whatever suits your needs, and a lot of it is opinion and preference.

It doesn't beat Firefox. It doesn't have all the extensions I like, none of my toolbars work in it and some of the websites I visit have very tiny text when I use Opera. I don't like Opera, I tried using it instead of Firefox, I didn't enjoy the experience. I used it for all of 10 minutes, decided I didn't like it, uninstalled it and went back to trusty old Firefox.
