if you know the email domain that each company uses you can send an email to any phone as a text message - like for me you can send a small email to 8127198140@cingularme.com and i get it as a text message - there are several other company email address i have available for the asking. you could also do a yahoo search "free sms worldwide" that might come up with something.

2 ways that i can think of off hand....
1) with instant messengers, you will need to add their number to their info, and make sure they have the IM too
2) you have to get a free account, but google has a spot on your homepage after you login, that lets you sms
