I would go to the nearest big library near you and check if they keep old copies of the Chicago Tribune or Chicago Sun-Times preferably on microfiche for the years 1988-1996. I would look through for dates a month after Christmas Eve for at each year.

Another alternative would be checking whether your library subscribes to a database such as Factiva or Lexis-Nexis and whether they would carry obituaries for someone who isn't a public figure.

There are also services that specialise in searching through obituaries.

the library has a web page you should be able to search Thur the obits from old news papers they will have it....
