It's all about politics.
If marijuana were legal, even if government controlled, people could still grow their own.
However, hard liquor is not so easily made by the average citizen.
And, home-brewing beer makers are not that many.
Legal liquor sales generate tax money, which the government loves.

Actually, this is a common misconception. The FDA conducted a major study on the medicinal benefits of marijuana in 1998ish -when Bill Clinton was considering legalizing medicinal marijuana. They concluded that it was unsuitable to legalize as a painkiller for a few major reasons:
1) Against light pains, it is almost completely ineffective - a couple of Advils are better at fighting minor pain.
2) Against serious pain, it is mildly effective, but there are far better medications available (Like Tramimpaadol, for instance) that are better at fighting pain AND have less side effects on the user's brain.
Ultimately, the FDA decided that marijuana was not an effective medication and did not clear it for market usage, just as it does with thousands of other ineffective medications each year.
Therefore, anyone who pushes for the legalization of marijuana for its "medicinal value" is either (1)very misinformed or (2) trying to mask his desire to legalize marijuana for recreational purposes behind this cloak of righteousness. That is, instead of saying "I want to pot to be legalized so I can get high," he is claiming "we should legalize marijuana to help sick people (and by the way, I can also use it to get high)."
While it is very easy for lawmakers to disagree with the first statement, it is much harder to disagree with the second. Every person with any trace of a heart would like to ease the suffering of terminally ill cancer or AIDS victims. However, we cannot let our emotions blind our reason. Marijuana is simply not the answer. The way to help ease the suffering of these patients is not to waste time and money harassing Congress to legalize a medication that is ultimately not very effective, but to spend that time and money in the development of new medications that ARE effective.

Marijuana is illegal, not because of anything that it did, but because of it's relatives. At the peak of the great depression, hemp was poised to make a comeback in the textile industry. this would have been very bad for the southern cotton producers (hemp can be grown virtually anywhere and the fiber is superior to cotton) as well as DuPont (the inventor of nylon), timberland owners and the young oil companies. By demonizing phycho-active hemp (using the unknown Mexican word 'marijuana') legislation began that would quickly absorb all types of hemp plants under it's umbrella. Now, 69 years later, the law still stands.
FYI: Hemp is the only plant that can produce enough cellulose per acre, with a wide enough range to make ethanol and bio-diesel production feasible for energy independence.

Because marajuana is only healthy towards people who need it, and alcohol is healthy in moderation with it clearing colesteral and all.
Of course, there's the political side of it, seeing as a few years ago they illegalized alcohol and the economic side of the world went crazy. Two years after the ban they brouth it back and everything slowly returned back to normal. So, in reality, illegalizing alcohol is like illegalizing smoking. It causes chaos.
Also, if we were to legalize marajuana, that wouldn't do the government any good. (It's not profitable) And unfortunately, out world revolves around money.

Your question made me pause and think. When I first applied to the Maharishi (many years ago) to study TM Meditation, the acceptance condition was that I abstain from recreational drugs for a previous period of 2 weeks. Of course no drugs are allowed if you meditate on an ongoing basis. No such restriction was placed on tobacco or alcohol.

Good question. And it's costing us dearly. Did you know that 1 in 175 Americans are in prison, and a huge number of those are there for no other reason than possession of marijuana? Your tax dollars at work.

because people suck and no one sees it that way. and to the guy that said pot has no redeeming qualities.....why dont you go tell a few cancer patients that and see what response you get.
its been proven to have medically redeeming qualities time and time again. it has no negative affects on the body, with the exception of the smoke in your lungs.

Liquor has better lobbyists. The people that promote marijuana legalization usually are "rough" looking and no one takes them seriously.
I'm all for it. Government could tax it, tobacco farmers would have something to grow and our jails would empty out. Not to mention people would mellow.
