Well the penalties won Italy the title, but as I have said it before I’ll say it now: Italy is not the kind of team that should be given the epithet “best in the world”, France showed us great games not just in the finals, but in all the other games (for ex. Vs. Brazil, vs. Portugal and vs. Spain)… Italy did not played good, they threw all their players in the 16 meter box letting France do all the running and the playing!

before the game i was hoping that it would not come down to penalties cause that was the world cup is shouldn't come down to luck but skill who could get around the other teams defense and score but from overall i think France should got the trophy even if they lost cause they had a lot more skill that Italy in my opinion i mean in the quarter finals portugal vs. england england down 1 man and still had the tie and then penalty kicks portugal got lucky but i guess we cant to anything about it now even if we want to but i still think all the penalty kicks at the end should have been over time till first goal or something like that cause the world cup should not come down to luck but skill :)

Although I agree that penalties are not "real" football (particularly being English!) I disagree that they are nothing but luck. Take a look at the game where Germany went out. There was no denying that they were soundly beaten on penalties not by luck, but because the opposition goalkeeper was very, very good and defending penalties.
As to the question itself, Italy were playing a fantastic game and I think few would really argue that they didn't deserve to win. Sure, a win on penalties dilutes it, but I still feel it was deserved.

I DON'T AGREE WITH PENALTY SHOOT-OUTS AS A WAY TO DECIDE A WORLD CUP, BUT I'M NOT THE MAN IN CHARGE AT FIFA, SO THE LAW STAYS AS IS. I WOULD BE IN FAVOR OF GIVING BOTH TEAMS 3 DAYS REST AND REPLAY THE GAME. BUT, IN THIS CASE, ITALY DESERVED THE WIN FOR A COUPLE OF REASONS. THEY WEE THE BETTER TEAM IN THE FINAL, FRENCH FANS WON'T AGREE, BUT THEN AGAIN WHO ACTUALLY AGREES WITH THE FRENCH. ITALY HAS LOST MANY GAMES IN PENALTY SHOOT-OUTS, INCLUDING THE 1994 WORLD CUP GAME TO BRAZIL IN L.A.. APPARENTLY YOUR A FRANCE FAN, AND YOU FORGET THAT FRANCE ACTUALLY WON SOME GAMES BASED ON PENALTIES, WHETHER DURING THE GAME OR IN A SHOOT-OUT, BUT I GUESS IT WAS OK THEN, RIGHT? SO WHEN FRANCE WINS THAT WAY IT'S SKILL, ANYONE ELSE BEATS FRANCE THAT WAY AND ITS LUCK...GIVE ME A BRAKE.

So what should they do to decide the winner if the scores are dreadlocked for 120 minutes, give them 30 more? Even Aftr that?
Penalies are cruel but we dont have any other choice. Even golden goal was cruel.
Ofcourse, Italy deserved to win as much as Zidane be awarded golden ball. They were better players, Defending powerhouses, Possesion was good, converting was good, everything was exceptional, even thier foul play and acting was excellent. Winning penalties for acting is as good as winning oscars.

I agree with highburybooks....you guys are a bunch of sore losers and would look for anything to criticize Italy...But you know what??
ITALY WON THE WORLD CUP..THE TROPHY IS IN ROME AND NOBODY IS GOING TO CHANGE THAT ...YOU CAN CRY ALL YOU WANT BUT THE FACT REMAINS THAT THE FRENCH ARE LOSERS!!

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!

Obviously France was the best team in the worldcup as they showed their best performance in the knockout stage. They were able to control game in final but luck favour the opponent team.
Argentina was also good team as they had good team game
