the computer is a compaq it only has windos 98 and i cant even get the defrag to do anything

Close out all the programs you can on your taskbar and then defrag. Someimes it takes a long time to drfrag and if it stops every little bit and restarts, then you have something running in the background. Try to figure out what is running and exit that program.
After it stops for the 10th time it will ask you if you want to continue or not. Make your choice. If you have a screen saver running, it will make defrag start over to so be sure you stop that before you defrag.

Sometimes it will stall if there are too many programs running in the start menu. Run scandisc first to check the drive and then reboot in safemode and run defrag from there.
