I'm so afriad right now to go in the ocean when i go but my friends are going to want to and i like the ocean it's just that i'm very scared since what happened. what are the possibilities of getting stuck in one? and what do you do?

They say you should swim parallel to the shore, until you are able to swim in.

You shouldnt be afraid, as they can tell you before you go in if there is a riptide problem. Some of the lifegaurd towers have flags. Just merely ask them.

I've been to the ocean a ton of times and I'm ok. Don't be a hero and go too far out. Try to stay at waist high levels and swim around a group of friends at all times. My suggestions is to take some sort of raft with you, or if you DO start to get pulled out be sure to swim parallel to the beach as opposed directly back to it.... That is said to be the best way to combat the pull back out to sea. Don't be afraid because when you're afraid you already have a disadvantage. Tell yourself you're a bad a-s-s and the ocean is afraid to pull you out because it knows you'll beat its face in. CHeers!

Check out riptides on wikipedia, they'll tell you how to spot them and avoid them, and how to get out of them. Basically, if you get caught in a riptide swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the current, then you can head back to the beach. Riptides are not that wide.

Don't try to fight the current, you'll only tire yourself out.

And I thought I had it tough with my dad..You are nineteen and it doesn't matter how old you are, you shouldn't be treated that way. I believe you made the right choice by getting out of there, but yet I don't understand why you are having a guilt feeling about it. In your heart you know you've made the right decision so don't let your parents manipulate you anymore. Tell yourself that you are a strong person, you can do anything and you deserve respect as a human being. Good luck to you and your guy :) and good luck to you in life itself hun..

I'm not sure what the chances are of getting pulled into one, but to get out of one, swim diagonally to shore and walk down the beach once you reach shore. Dont try to swim straight back to the beach. You wont make it. The pull of the current is significantly less if you swim diagonally.

It's unlikely that you can get caught in one, you have to read how the waves are working, if you do happen to get caught in one, just swim parallel to the shore.... it's like when you are approached by a speeding semi... you don't try to out-run it, you don't go agenst it, you just move out of the way
