The reason I ask this question is, a co-worker and I were talking yesterday and we both agreed that we are ashamed to admit to people what we do for a living. Anyone else in the same boat? I find that anytime I meet someone new or run into an old classmate I'm embarrassed.

It doesn't really matter what you do, but are you proud to say you do it?

No, I'm not a stripper, hooker or drug dealer.

I work in a public library, in a state which really doesn't respect education or libraries. Like the school teacher mentioned further down in the answers, many people just don't respect education very much.

Yes, I am very proud of what I do for a living. I help people that honestly want to pursue their goals and are willing to work had at it to attain them. I wear the uniform of our nation and hold my head high, proud, as I wear it walking down the street. I know that being a soldier is not for everyone, most people don't have the internal fortitude to do it, or they have no desire to work toward their goals (which are really dreams, not goals in this case).

I do my job in San Francisco, where almost nobody respects the military, our country, our flag or those of us that wear the uniform. I still wear it proudly, daily.

Well I'm retired. And I now work as a manager of a bar as well as bar tender. I Am not ashamed of anything I did or do. I retired from the Police Dept. after having a heart attack. And I now tend bar and manage same. I would say IF you are embarrassed then I would think it is time to find a job that you don't have such a problem with. BUT what is it you do? Are you a stripper or hooker or something? Talk to me.

I'm a teacher and I am not ashamed of what I do, but some people look down on it, because I get my summers off and hang out with kids all of the time. I make up for it during the school year. Family members are suggesting jobs for my husband and I all the time so we could make more money and have a bigger house or whatever. ARGH!

Nothing is so ashamed as long as you are doing something proper and contribute to the society. We were raised by my dad who was a driver and my mother was a cleaner. All my brothers and sister are graduates.

I am proud of what I am doing, I am a private tutor.
