To add to the previous post...

evaporation - if 2 different components are mixed together and have different boiling points then you can use evaporation in a process called distillation. You heat up the mixture and the more volitile one will boil off. This is like using alcohol in cooking, as you cook it, the alcohol boils off leaving all of the flavorings.

condensation - This works for gasses if one has a lower condensing point. A similar process also works for liquids if one has a lower freezing point then another. One example is an air conditioner. By lowering the temperature of the air you are able to condense the water out of it.

filtering - This works if you have a solid and a liquid. Another possibility is to add a reagent to the mix that will cause one component to form a precipitate (a solid). Then you can just filter the solid out. This would be like straining the juice from a can of fruit.
