They sit on their launch pads and wait until the day most people are off work and enjoying the outdoors - Bank Holidays etc. - and then decide the ruin it for them.
They truly are evil.

Flying Ant Day is the time when the ant colony sends its winged virgins up to mate and form new colonies. They do this when their instincts tell them it's time. This is usually based on air temperature, humidity and length of sunlight (the time of year)
This day is also chosen by all members of the same species (in other words, the other ant colonies that are the same type of ant). They do this so that mating between "brothers" and "sisters" is minimized and they are more able to "mix-it-up" with respect to genetics.

per chance you should enable them look after the fly larvae first, then look after them. i have under no circumstances battled them in compost, yet when I were given ants in my abode i got here across a answer of boric acid and sugar helped. I used a ratio of about a million area boric acid powder, 15 aspects sugar, and about 30 aspects water. Or a million Tablespoon boric acid, a million cup sugar, 2 cups water(a million:16:32). Jut placed a puddle of that on a chunk of plastic sitting on excellent of the compost, and the ants will take it decrease back to their nest and share it and kill off the total colony.

Usually happens when it is warm and sunny and when the queen ant has laid her eggs and there are too many in the nest so they have to find somewhere else to live and look for food.
