As with any genre, there are bad examples that don't represent what the music is really about. But for some reason, the money hungry music industry has made these examples seem like the norm. Judging by the answers in this thread, these people have been foole d into thinking hip hop is nothing but guns, drugs and misogyny. For real rap, I suggest you check out:
KRS-One
A Tribe Called Quest
Public Enemy
Immortal Technique (My rhymes will expose Bush and Bin Laden, as 2 separate parts of the same Seven Headed Dragon...)
Dead Prez

There is an entire level of rap that most listeners will never hear because it isn't flashy enough, but that doesn't mean that it can't teach you something.

It can be but if you are talking about the state that hip hop is in today 98% of it is pure GARBAGE.I think it makes black people look totally ignorant. All black people are not ignorant, but if you look at hip hop videos and listen to the lyrics you might have a hard time believing that.

Any genre of music can be educational, it just depends on the lyrics and the message they are trying to promote in the song. Some people have the notion that rap music is bad and that simply is not the case. Every genre of music has both good and bad messages, it all depends on the song, not the genre.

Yes it can be educational have you heard that song by Lyfe Jennings? it's called S.E.X very educational- Lauren Hill, Floetry, Kirk Franklin, TLC ,Common, Eminem, Cris Cross etc... just to name a few artist who made an educational track. Listen to the lyrics people.
Don't get me wrong there is definitely some tracks out there that is just wrong but I believe that is in every music category except for Gospel music of course.
