Just speaking from personal experience here... when it comes to CD's, brand doesn't seem to matter in my burner. DVD's, however, are a different story. My burner only likes name-brand discs, like Verbatim, for instance.
As for the +/- question: it is the aftermath of DVD Format War I. DVD Format War II is being waged as we speak, DVD-HD vs. blu-ray.
Everyone wants to lock consumers into their format so we'll have to buy from them. All consumers want is something that works the way it's supposed to without having to worry about what is compatible with which format. Sorry, I've digressed, I'll get off my soapbox now.

I use either,my dvd copying program (shrink, combined with dvd 43) asks me for a blank disc,-dvd + or dvd - i dont notice any difference in the quality of the movie. It was explained to me once the difference between the two,but it was so insignificant at the time,i have forgotten. The thing i have been told is that burning at 8 times speed discs is better quality than 16 times speed,--but i have not noticed any difference myself.-good luck.

Someone here asked that before and I forgot what it was. I think + is more compatible. So if you have a - drive you can only play - dvd's or so?
Personally I use - discs.

Personally, i found that + is just more common. So i only write to + cos when i let other ppl borrow my discs they don't really struggle when reading from it. For some odd reason, reading from - is a struggle for a lot of ppl.

It depends on what you are burning. If its movies most players accept one format or the other more likely -r. If it is for information it doesn't really matter in my preference. I go with what ever is cheaper.
