G-Force is the term to designate the amount of force applied to a person or object. 1G is equal to the same gravational pull force on the surface of the earth. 2g is twice that amount, 4G is four times that amount.

To delve a bit deeper, here's what causes those G-Forces.

G-Forces of a jet flight can be compared to a Rollar Coaster ride albeit they are a lot stronger.

Acceleration G-Forces are produced with dramtic changes in speed, forward or backwards. Image you are on a rollar coaster where the ride starts by it 'shooting' the train out of the starting gate. At the beginning of this ride you feel you are being pressed backwards in your seat. This is an example of Acceleration G-Force. This is also experienced when you are in a car and it takes off quickly from a stop. A quick stop can also produce G-Forces but are considered Negative G-Forces. A bit more about negative G-Force later.

The strongest G-forces are caused by dramatic changes in direction at high speed. Imagine your again on the rollar coaster and you are speeding down the first big drop. When the train reaches the bottom (at maximum speed) and begins it's climb back up, you feel you are being pulled downward into your seat. This is a positive G-Force. This force is caused by the centrifcal forces much like a rock on the end of a string that is being spun in a circle.

Now as your rollar coast approaches the top of the next hill, again it changes direction and heads back down. When this happens you feel as if you are 'floating' or being pulled out of your seat. This is the Negative g-forces as the centrifical forces of the curve of the hill counter balances the gravational force of the earth.

Each G is equivalent to the Gravitational Force of the Earth.

Gravity has the effect of 32 feet / sec /sec, which means that an item dropped falls 32 feet in the first second and accelerates at that same rate until wind resistance slows it.

2G is twice that force, 4G is four times.

G's can be pulled in six directions, left, right, up down, front, back. For fighter pilots these are called in directions based on their eyeballs.

For example, 2G's eyeballs in is going forward twice the speed of gravity.

To make a fast plane turn sharply requires a large force to push it to the side of its flight path. That force comes from the wings moving through the air and it pushes the plane which pushes the pilot sitting in the plane with a force that behaves just like gravity. 4G means the force is 4 times as much as the gravity force that is pushing you toward the ground right now.

everyone is defining G by gravitational pull which is correct but to put into context.

If the pilot weighs 200 lbs

at 2 G's he would weigh 400 lbs

at 4 G's he would weigh 800 lbs

g is short for gravitational pull so 2 is twice earths gravity and 4 is 4 times
