Number one thing to do is do some radical clean-up. Get rid of stuff...minimize clutter, and furniture. Get rid of nic-nacs, photos, toys, etc. Pack them in boxes and store somewhere. Shelves should be almost empty with only the odd 'nice' piece for decoration. Outdoors- same thing...any 'stuff' lying around...get rid of it! Have carpeting steam cleaned, freshen up paint..clean windows. Weed gardens, flowerbeds. Hang nice colorful planters. Sweep porches, walkways, Paint porches, window frames if needed. Wash curtains, blinds . Buy some nice bedding...comforters with matching curtains. and CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN. If your into doing more work...I would replace sinks and taps. Install nice light fixtures. Replace all light switch and plug in receptacle plates with bright new ones...the brass ones always add some class. Replace trims with nice new colonial trim. Remove linoleum flooring and replace with ceramic tiles.Buy a nice fancy swag type shower curtain and some matching accessories...towels, soap dish, garbage can. Spruce up kitchen..with new cabinet doors and hardware, perhaps new countertop. But this only if they are old and worn looking. If you have an unfinished basement..you can put up some drywall and paint it. Maybe build an extra room that can be counted as an extra bedroom, but remember it'll need to have a window. This is not all that expensive...especially if you have a handyman in your life.

If you have an unfinished basement, finishing a portion of it can add square footage to your home. All that takes is some drywall (not too expensive), paint and some inexpensive but nice floor covering.
Replacing ragged/dated flooring can be inexpensive and effective.
Fresh paint/new trim throughout the house.
New plumbing fiixtures in the kitchen and bathroom(s) can be helpful.
Basic landscaping improvements can improve curbside appeal, thereby helping with value.
Adding a good quality deck/patio/storage shed.
Your best bet... contact a local realtor and find out what common things people in your neighborhood/town are looking for. If it's hardwood floors and a swimming pool, maybe that's what you want to focus on, because that's what the demand is and that's what will push up the value of your house, you know?
Good luck.

There are no cheap ways to increase the VALUE of your home. For every dollar you put into a house, by nature you get double out of it.
Some more inexpensive ways to increase the value is:
Paint the exterior of the house.
Laminate Flooring.
New bathroom vanities and toilets.
Replacement of broken windows.

First is cleanliness. Then, paint is by far the cheapest way. Paint rooms in bright nuetral colors. A good clean kept yard will greatly help, too. Remember, the first impression someone gets walking up to the door tends to set their mood while they're looking around. If you have a little more money, new carpet(or other flooring) will help. I have always been told to concentrate on the kitchen as well. Anything you can do to make a kitchen more attractive, should be considered. I hope this helps.

Curb appeal is very important. Cut the grass and edge. Plant flowers. Trim shrubbery. Wash the windows. Paint outside, if necessary, especially the front door. Inside, clear all clutter. Clear the counter tops. When showing, leave all of the lights on and open all curtains. Paint inside with neutral colors. Use a neutral air freshener before all showings. Make sure the house is spotless, especially the bathrooms and kitchen.

Clean, clean, clean and declutter. Pare down the furniture to make the rooms look bigger. Make sure the drapes are pulled away from the windows, you want as much light as possible. Exterior should be clean, you may want to buy a hose attachment the creates a strong stream of water and hose down the exterior. No litter in the front or back yards. Planters with flowers at the entry. New mailbox and house numbers. If the appliances are clean and in good condition you don't have to replace them.

Other than convincing a celebrity to die in your house, there's not much you can do to increase the "value" of the house that’s not going to cost more than the value added. Best to do is try to raise the "appeal" of the home and that is basically cosmetic. Clean it up, throw some paint on it, and mow the grass. Good Luck

Fresh paint inside and out is about all I can think of. Perhaps some landscaping would help. Those don't really increase the "value" of the house, just make it more sellable. To really increase the value of your house you need to upgrade kitchen and baths - which is far from cheap.
Patience isn't exactly correct about getting double out for every dollar you put in. I did major upgrades to my home (kitchen, bath, garage, electrical, driveway, deck, landscaping, pond and pergola to name a few) and just about broke even.

CURB APPEAL. plant some inexpensive flowers, or do some simple landscaping (such as pulling weeds, pruning shrubs, manicuring the lawn, flower beds, etc.) paint the front door a complementary color with the house. try planting flowers around your mailbox. paint the inside (and outside, if needed).
often times, though, more expensive methods work best. if you have the money, and your appliances are dated, update the kitchen. replace the roof if needed. make sure that any small things are taken care of, such as knobs, electrical outlet covers, light switches, etc. make sure everything works properly. this is VERY important.
basically, if your house is gorgeous inside, yet the outside looks dumpy, you're going to have a hard time selling your home for what you'd like.
