Ok some say it hurts some say it dosn't, Some say nearer to the bone the more it hurts, some say nearer muscle it hurts I only have one on my shoulder near the bone, it was like someone scratching with a finger nail quite hard.
So no not painful but I suppose it depends on your pain threshold.
If you want one do it but as stated previously don't do it on a whim as it is permanent (even tattoo removal leaves a scar)
I hope that helps?

I got a tattoo in 1984 on my right arm. I've always liked it and always will because it fits my personality. BUT...there are some things that someone should have told me about getting a tattoo. For example no one told me that when you get older (and fatter) the lines on your tattoo also get fatter (and more blurry). No one told me that having a tattoo out in the sun would cause it to fade (and become more blurry - though I should have been able to figure that one out on my own). And no one told me that when you're eighty and have a tattoo that is really OLD, FADED, and BLURRY that it will look nothing like the cute picture you put on your arm when you were 23. Other than that it's a little painful, because what they're doing is scarring your body with a needle that they are dragging across the top layer of your skin. Ofcourse the needle only goes in about an eighth inch or so, and it moves up and down really fast, but the effect is the same.
Hope this gives you some information to contemplate.

A tattoo can be painful, especially so if placed on nerve- or bone-filled areas. It feels, initially, like being scraped with a hot needle (which is, well, exactly what it is). After several minutes of this, it'll feel like road burn, as the area becomes larger. Eventually, though, if you can bare through this part for several minutes, all the nerves in the area start 'shutting off', and it feels about like poking yourself with a somewhat sharpened pencil; not too bad, but still irritating.

I got my first tattoo on the inside of my ankle, with half on the actual anklebone, and the other half on the fleshy area behind it. The anklebone part drove me nuts as I could feel the vibrations from the needle going halfway up my leg through my shin, and the pain was immense. The other half wasn't so bad, and had more of a cutting sensation as opposed to a jackhammer-like feeling. The more firm muscle an area has (such as the arm or shoulder), the less it will hurt. The bonier, more fat- or nerve-filled areas (like the stomach, butt, spine, wrists, or armpits), the more it will hurt.

It was a little sore for about a day, no more than road burn, but after that, it felt normal again.

keep in mind that a tattoo is created by a rapidly moving needle continually piercing your skin. i have a fairly high pain tolerance, but it still felt like getting shots in a sunburned area. it also depends where you get the tattoo. some areas on your body hurt more than others. if you choose an area that's bony, such as the top of the foot, shoulder blade, or right over your spine, it will hurt more than a fleshy area.

more importantly than the pain factor, you need to consider that tattoos are FOR LIFE. carefully consider what you are going to get. what is cute when you are 18 may look pretty stupid when you are 30. make sure that you get something personally significant and don't necessarily choose one of the designs from the flash in the shop.

It's a bit tender, but not unbearable. Different parts of the body hurt more than others though - my thigh didn't hurt at all really, but my bum - which I thought would be easy, with the flesh and all - stung a lot more. A girl who had a tattoo around her bellybutton had to keep stopping though because it was too painful.

It felt a bit like being cut, very lightly, then a sore graze for a few days afterwards.

ignoring the comments like don't do it, and asuming you have chosen that you realy want one and have the picture in your head or even better a bit of paper stuck next to your bed so you have to look at it everyday. pain wise read the folowing:

depends on your pain threshhold, it usualy feels like pins and needles or scratching sunburn because it's kind of warm/hot and tingley.

it buzzes because of the tattoo machine and you feel that in parts that aren't even being tattooed but it isn't that unpleasant, some people actualy like that bit of it.

cirtain places hurt more like inside your arms , by the kidneys, chest, bits of the ankle, shins. bellys are uncomfortable but just because you have to strech the skin so you're leaning on it.

some places are good for a first one arms other than inside your elbow elbows wrists and innerarm, are fairy painless. there are places that do realy realy hurt like heads necks and faces.

if they were as bad as anyone made out in thier head do you think anyone would come back for more? your first one you realise how little it actauly hurts.

but you can get this stuff called ametop gel, you put it on an hour before the tattoo and wrap it in clingfilm, you get it from chemists and covers about 2inches per tube, it slightly numbs the are for about half an hour. good if your having one of the more uncomfortable places done.

but mostly it's just buzzy and anoying with little bit every now and then where you'll go "oo" but that's about it.

drink lots of water before hand and have food so you don't have an empty stomach, and don't worry about it. the worst thing about a first tattoo is in your own mind.

after the tattoo the day after it will be sore, like maybe a bruise or sunburn, then the day after that it'll scab up and eventualy end up realy itchy, don't itch it because it takes the colour out.

don't drink before your tattoo because it thins the blood and will make you bleed the ink out so it will heal patchey and strangly makes it hurt more, assuming your contiouse. most tattoo artists will not tattoo someone on any alcohol or drugs.

"Tatoos mark you as trailer trash. And don't forget that you can get Hep C and even HIV from the needles. "
only if you go somewere dirty make sure you know what the tattooist is like before you go. we have everything disposable and if not steralisable in the utoclave, so everything is either new and disposed of after your tattoo or put through an autoclave like they use at hospitals for sergical equipment only smaller.

It does hurt but it doesn't last long. Mines a smallish tat at the base of my spine and it burnt when being drawn/coloured (like when a cigarette touches the skin) but after it just feels like a bruise for a while. It's not a terrible pain but just choose something small to start that you can extend as every ones pain barrier is different. If you do get it done rub preparation H on it afterwards as this will stop any swelling and keep the colour.

I have two, one on my back and one on my tummy. My only advice to you would be to make sure that you're 100% certain that you want to do it before you go ahead with it. I love the one on my back because I can look at it whenever I want but most of the time I forget about it but I despise the one on my tummy. I regretted it the second I got it done and it hurt like a bi*ch. It is sore getting it done but it's more like an irriatating pain as opposed to an unbearable pain, so you should be ok.

Just be sure and think about it!

Hi ive got a tattoo at the top of my arm
it didnt hurt at all and its NOT like hot needles

it only depends on where you get the tattoo
if its near a bony bit then it will hurt
but if its on a fatty bit like where i got done its fine
i would advise you to get a tattoo in a place that can be coverd when u want it coverd lol
