You would have to understand the customs and their religion. There is a great article in July or August Glamour magazine.

In India, the parents of girls would have to give a dowry in the marriage process which could become a great burden to a country where poverty is widespread.

Having boys is also a social status so, when parents find out that they are having a girl, the pressure to "get rid" of the child is very high. Abortions in India has been legal since the early 1970s and it is even free at some government run hospitals. Private clinics charge small fees for abortions and it is not uncommon for a woman to have 6 abortions in order to produce a son for her husband.

This has become an epidemic in India. Girls are becoming so scarce that mail-order brides from villages or neigboring countries are a big business. These girls are being bought at an alarming rates and prices $500-$1,200 as modern day slaves and child bearers. Some men would sell their wives if she can only give him daughters. Some men sell their daughters because they are "too much of a burden". Some women are even afraid to leave their homes because they are afraid of being assaulted by men.

I was sick after reading that article. It is astonishing that this could be happening today and nothing is being done to stop the inhumanity.

12 weeks if it is without a doctors reccomendation. After that there usually needs to be a medical reason to abort the pregnancy. Sorry to say but it looks as though you are going have this baby. By the time you get in for an appointment you will be past 12 weeks. You really need to make sure that if you do get an abortion, that this is what you want and that you won't regret it later. Just so you know, this the development of your baby now: Your baby, just over 1 1/2 inches long and about the size of a fig, is now almost fully formed. Her hands will soon open and close into fists, tiny tooth buds are beginning to appear under her gums, and some of her bones are beginning to harden. She's already busy kicking and stretching, and her tiny movements are so effortless they look like water ballet. These movements will become more frequent as her body grows and becomes more developed and functional. You won't feel your baby's acrobatics for another month or two — nor will you notice the hiccupping that may be happening now that her diaphragm is forming.

In China and India, girls are married off and are not responsible for their parents, they are responsible for the parents of their husband. So these families NEED a boy to take care of them in their old age.
China has the one child policy in most regions, but ethnic minorities and some farm families are allowed 2 or 3. Many Chinese families have a daughter raise her for a few years and if they get pregnant and have a son, give the daughter up for adoption. It's sad, they will often "brand" the daughter with a coin so they will be able to find her later.
China is already begining to see the burden of so many years of the one child policy. Women are being kidnapped and forced to marry men in other regions of China.
In India it seems that girls are a financial burden. "The affluent also are choosing feticide, as evidenced by the fact that states with the lowest ratios of girls to boys also are the most prosperous, such as Punjab, Gujarat and Haryana.

Affluent women, the analysts say, believe they will have a better standard of living if they have only sons.

Land inheritance also is an issue, as daughters now are entitled legally to an equal share of land when their parents die."

Yes it used to be the case in India and China but its not true today atleast for 98 percent of the times:

Being coming from India I also know the reason for it...these events usually happen in the poor and families suffering from poverty...they don't do it for pleasure....but if the girls grow up it will be more money demanding for them because the girls family will have to give dowry to the groom and this is the main reason why people didn't used to like having girls. They were mostly uneducated villagers. But nowadays even the girls go to work and brings bread to the family so it isn't that hard on the family and also the dowry system is starting to diminish in most places in India.

As for China they even award money to the parents who have girls to discourage abortion of females. This has changes the situation tremendously and i believe these kind of outlook is being cleared off of the society for good.

First of all, China is not a democratic country--the Government is trying to control its population and there is a preference for boys because they areperceived to be stronger and and more intelligent. In India, the Gov't doesn't control the size of the family, however, there is "dowry," the girls family has to meet the financial demands of the boy's family in a marriage and it can be very costly. I don't hting the problem of abortions based on gender is as prevalent in India--although I am sure this happens. By the way it is illega, in India,l for MDs to perform an abortion solely based on gender

India: because of the dowery the family has to pay when the girl gets married some day, poor families can't afford having a girl/girls. It even happens that indian husbands kill their wifes in order to set their financial troubles by remarrying and receiving another woman's dowery. It has become sad practise to set women on fire and make it look like household accidents. And we are talking here about doweries that consist e.g. of a new TV set or fridge..it reflects the value of lower castes' women. Just sad!!!

China: Due to China's overpopulation, couples with just 1 child will be rewarded while those with 2 or more children are facing major disadvantages in taxes, access to education etc..Most couples would like to have a son who will carry on their family names, so they female fetus get aborted

In China girls are seen as useless. The boys do all the work over there. It is very sad and I think that is the reason for so many Americans adopting Chinese girls. I think that it is great that Americans would do that.

each family in china can only have 2 at the max of children so they would rather have a son than a daghter because the son would be able to support the family when they are old
