OK, first off you may be better calling an exterminator. They know where and how and when to spray for these yucky bugs. Granted it might cost you a little more than you planned on, but in reality it might be better.
Secondly, if you really don't want to do that then here's a recipe you can make to kill roaches.
1/2 lb of borax
30 ounces of powdered sugar
1/2 ounce of cocoa powder
1 ounce of sodium chloride
place all ingredients into a medium plastic container and mix thoroughly. this bug poison should be sprinkled around wherever the problem exists. This is HARMFUL TO PETS AND CHILDREN and should be used with CAUTION.
Now my personal opinion is to go with the first option. They will come in and spray and within 30 min to an hour they'll leave and the roaches will start to disappear. You'll probably need a second application to make sure that the roaches are gone. Saver and easier this way.
Hope this helps and GOOD LUCK

Capt Feat... said everything i would have, but i have also found that a 3n1 Flea (pets) Killer can do the trick... We have Spray stuff from Wal*Mart in the pet isle and it kills them instantly. your gonna have big ones for a while, and MAKE SURE WHERE YOU KILL THEM YOU CLEAN THE AREA WITH DISINFECTANT!!! If they have an egg sack on them, you will kill the big one, but the babies will still hatch. A few weeks after all the big ones seem to be gone, you are probably gonna experience little ones. Kill them too. After about 6 weeks, you should be good.
Also, a good home spray treatment is called Ortho-Max Home Defense. It is about 12 dollars from Wal*Mart in the home and garden section. You spray it inside and out along the floor boards, and paying special attention to the areas under fridge, stove, washer, dryer, bathroom sink, toilet, and kitchen sink. They love dark, wet places.
Good Luck. And keep in mind that Cali, Texas, Ark, Louisanna, Miss., Alabama, and Florida are gonna have them no matter what. You just have to stay on top of things.
Oh yeah, if you didn't already know, "water bugs" are roaches too, so treat them the same way you treat cockroaches. There are over 10,000 different kinds of roaches, and each one carries about 50 communicable diseases.

Keep everything extremely clean...don't leave anything down that they could eat ..or hide amongst....like clothing(dirty or clean), bedding, papers (newspapers, work papers, or otherwise) anything that can be cleaned with a diluted solution of bleach and water ...do it...and not just once these activities that I am listing are going to have to become routine for you ...especially if you want to keep these nasty little creatures away ...my question is ....do you live in a house or an apartment .....because if you live in a house It will be somewhat easier to kill and drive these suckers away.....but if you live in an apartment then it can become a little tricky....because all of the walls are connected and if you are clean ..and all your neighbors are nasty then the roaches will take a break so to speak from your crib and just go kick it at the neighbors houses until you slip up on your cleaning regime.......so you can not ....I repeat can not slack up . Now to start killing them you can use the Raid bait ...it come in like a caulking tube ....it is excellent .....you might need to buy several tubes to be able to get some in the majority of cracks and crevices....behind stoves, refrigerators, around automatic dishwashers....you get the idea .......also wiping surfaces down with a Tea Tree Oil / water solution will also be extremely helpful ....do that only after you have cleaned everything with the bleach solution......I hope this helps you ....

Cockroaches are a pain but they can be eliminated. The first thing you need to do is to find out why they are infesting your house. They are there for three reasons, food, water and shelter. One way to keep roaches away is SANITATION. Make sure the house is clean, dishes are clean and the trash is taken out. Also take care of any leaky faucets. To make sure they don’t even come inside in the first place there are some precautions you can take, one thing is old caulking. The older caulk gets the more it deteriorates and the roaches can chew through it, and into your house. Also the substance that the caulk is made from is something that roaches use to lay their eggs. (It’s not only caulking, pretty much any kind of substance like that). To make sure that doesn’t happen you can remove any old caulking and replace it. To kill them once they are in the house you have lots of options. First though, you need to identify the type of roach that you have. German Roaches are what many people would identify as "water bugs" (because of their fondness for moist areas) or "kitchen roaches" (because that is where most infestations begin.) They prefer a warm, moist environment. Large Roaches, or what some people refer to as Palmetto bugs and "flying roaches", prefer a cool damp area (sewers, septic tanks, cellars and basements, mulch, etc...)
You can use glue traps or bait. You would need to refer to the package to find out which glue trap or bait would be best for the type of roach that you have. (If you decide to use a trap or bait BE SURE to keep it away for children or pets.) You can also choose to use an insecticide. However, if you chose this method follow all of the instructions carefully. You can also use a roach bomb which can be very effective when done correctly. Follow the instructions!!! I will say it again, no matter what you decide to use FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS! Some people think they know better and will use too much or do not apply it correctly. The people that made the products are professionals; they know what they are doing.
Also to keep roaches from coming in you might consider using an outdoor insecticide (like granule), but again, read and follow the instructions carefully. You don’t want anyone to get hurt from exposure or accidental inhalation. Also to get them off of your property, make sure you mow and maintain your lawn, and keep and trash picked up, also you need to make sure your garage is clean and maintained, roaches like to live there too.
Make sure that any holes or cracks on the outside of your home are fixed.
Prevention is always best!

Try boric Acid. If you have a dry bottle that will allow it come out as a dust. dust under refrigerator, stove, cabinets, and all baseboards and any crack or crevice that you can get it into. This substance is cheap and will work. just don't leave it in clumps as it is unsightly and will cake up with humidity and any moisture. The exterminator is the best answer but if the $$$ are too much for you then try it you will have little to loose.

Clean out the whole apt or house.
Keep clothes, books off of floors........
Vacuum as many times a week as ppl in household.
Keep kitchen spotless..........no food on floors, counters, throw garbage out daily, cover garbage.
Don't put dishes away wet, take shoes off at entrance, wash clothes frequently esp if you're in roach infested environments.......
Don't leave dirty dishes in sink overnight. Wash or use dishwasher.
Neighbors my have roaches so talk with landlord.
Foggers work but cleanliness is most important.
Boric acid can work but is bad for children/ppl if they eat or breathe in powder.
Clean under fridge, washer, dryer and stove-----favorite hiding places for roaches.
Electronic Pest Control devices can help a little.
Call a Pest Professional if situation doesn't improve.

Hi I'm a landlord in FL with lots of roach experience. The best method by far is a bait that comes in a tube/syringe and looks like peanut butter. It is sold at Wall-Mart for about 6 bucks. No fumes to breath, and it is effective for many months. Just apply it in out-of-sight places all around your house. Pay special attention to the kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

1) I heard something in chrysanthemums (the smell?) repel cockroaches.
2) Combat traps.
3) Roach bombs.
4) Some people make homemade boric acid traps (put some kind of food, maybe sugar, with boric acid in aluminum foil and place in areas roaches walk -- under sink), but make sure you don't have any pets or kids around & keep away from real food b/c boric acid is poisonous.
5) Exterminator.

Spray a pesticide designed for roaches around the outside of all your doors and windows to help prevent them from coming in in the first place. Once they're in they like to hide in places like behind your refridgerator, behind your stove, and in closets/cupboards. Anywhere dark and preferably close to food. So if you think they're in your house be sure to treat those areas. Aside from pesticides I've also heard that Borax works.
