Edith Hamilton's _Mythology_ is a classic for just this kind of thing - it's got enough reference material that adults can understand the sources for many of the stories related, but she takes care to actually tell the stories of heroes and monsters as well, in an easy to read fashion. I don't know if this text is usually illustrated, but with a good companion book like _The Everything Classical Mythology Book: Greek and Roman Gods, Goddesses, Heroes, and Monsters from Ares to Zeus_ you'd get a very good and complete picture.

I agree with Iain T, that Usborne book is very good, and it has lovely illustrations by Rodney Matthews too. There are biographies of characters at the back ,as well as the most well known myths.
I like Robert Graves' Greek Myths which has the most thorough writing on Greek mythology, but there aren't any pictures and might be too hard going for children.

Illustrated Guide to Greek Myths and Legends
I had a flick through this when I was in a book shop the other day coincidentally.
Admittedly I haven't read the thing, but it looks like the kind of thing you're after.

Bullfinch's Mythology is a good book, but more for adults than kids. Although I enjoyed it as a teenager.

Puffin Classics printed a e book titled 'Greek Myths and Heroes' or something like that. The thoughts are retold proper, and it has a staggering number of quite a few myths, consisting of ones like Hades and Persephone, and thoughts of heroes like Heracles.

d'aulaires book of greek myths is a good one. thats the one that i started on. some of the stories are softened (ie rape parts), so kids can read it. it has lots of (god) pictures and some family trees, and it goes through a lot of the myths.
