The Y2K bug wasn't as big a deal in the scientific and engineering communities. It was mostly a business/bank issue.

To save space in large databases, thru the 1900's the year was stored as only the last 2 digits. So when it asked for a year it was '76 or '83 or '95. The 19 was taken for granted.

To fix it, the databases had to be rewritten to expand EVERY year field so that 2005 was differnt than 1905
