I just worry so much about my very active 5 month old getting her face into the bumper. I find her sooo very close so many times. I would hope that her instinct would make her move her head, but I just worry all night when I find her face pressed against the bumper.

Thanks for the answers so far--good points! The only thing I worry about not having a bumper is her breaking her arm or leg with it sticking out of the crib...is that an unrealistic worry?

I used bumpers for only a short time with my first baby because I would find his face pushed into the fabric in the morning. My second baby is now 9 months old and I haven't used bumpers at all with him.
My feeling is, even if you find your baby's faced smashed against the crib rails, it's not like she was being forcefully pushed against it. I don't think babies move fast enough in their sleep to actually hurt themselves on a crib rail. Neither of my kids have ever been hurt that way.

The most current recommendation is to not use bumpers in a baby's crib. I would remove them now. I have been a licensed home daycare provider for almost 20 years. Recommended safe sleep for your baby has 7 steps. 1. Baby sleeps in his/her own crib, bassinet, or portable crib. 2. Put baby to sleep on his/her back even when he can roll over. 3. Nothing in sleeping area. 4. Keep baby's face uncovered. Use a sleeper instead of a blanket. 5. Don't allow smoking around the baby. 6. Do not overheat or overdress the baby. 7. Use a firm mattress with a tightly fitted sheet.
I have also been a mom for 27 years. All 4 of my kids slept in a crib with bumpers and they are now a healthy 27, 24, 21, and 9 years old. It is unavoidable to worry about our kids, but sometimes the recommendations are a little excessive and I suggest taking a step back once in a while from all the "advice" out there and follow your mom-instinct - it is usually pretty accurate!

I bought very expensive bedding, including bumpers for both her cradle and her crib. However, when I had her, I decided not to use them and still haven't after 4 1/2 months. I would just hate for something to happen and know that I caused it by something as silly as a bumper. My pediatrician told us that there was really no reason to have the bumper in the crib. Before they are old enough to move around, you don't have to worry about them bumping their heads on the rails, and after they are old enough to move around, you have to worry about them getting stuck. So, I would say to take the bumper out.

They say in many parenting classes that all toys and pillows or crib bumpers should be removed from the crib before your baby goes to sleep.

I would say by 8 months remove it definelty... use your gut mom... if you feel unsure about it.. try it without the bumper one night and see if she does okay... really it is only there for protecting her from hitting her head and face on the crib... I say use your instint on this one... your her mom.. your the only one who can use your judgement to make decisions for her to keep her safe!

5 mos old is too old for the bumpers to still be in there. I always took them out as soon as they start rolling and scooting so they don't get tangled up in them.

I took mine out about 10 months as he grew more and more wild in his sleep patters. Now I come in to see his face smashed between to bars, but at least he can breathe. Every kid is different, so if it concerns you enough to want to know, it's probably time.

I think you should take it out. You'd hate to walk in and find her face trapped under it. And it happens. My son was about your kid's age when I caught him stuck underneath it. If they can roll over, they can get into some amazing things.

Hi, I left ours until the kid is old enough to rip it off and bite on it,
but covering the face can be an issue

I think when the child can pull themselves up to a standing position or when they start to pull it off.
