I think it is the worst thing ever put into play. Well not at first but now its just abused. People want more money who don't want to work so they just have another kid. Something needs to happen. They should be given a time frame to get on there feet, after that cut them off and take the kids. There are a lot of people out there looking to adopt a child and they will probably be better off with parents who truly will care from them. BM~

I'm with you. We should spend (just some) of that money on making child care affordable. It seems to me that's the #1 barrier to keeping people working. Other than that, there are jobs enough for everyone - why else would we get all these immigrants seeking a better life in the land of opportunity?
I myself am sick and tired of paying for other people's handouts. I pay taxes on what I earn, taxes on what I spend, taxes on what I own, school taxes for children I don't have....
I would take any awful job out there if I needed it - nothing is below me if I am hungry. It seems like it's people like me who finance the lifestyles of people who just don't find working worth it (because they know they will be taken care of by the government!)

Part of the problem is ignorance.
The highest amount of people on welfare are elderly.
Yes some people abuse it and those people stick out like a sore thumb however they are not in the majority.
And it is not just the people that abuse it but the flawed system.

As far as taking their children away...in some cases that should probably be done anyway. But just because someone can not afford life in todays world does not mean they are a bad parent.
Of course that is not everyone...but you generalized a whole lot of people.

But let me just throw this out there...
NONE of this is true I am just throwing it out for sake of arguement and cases such as this happen more than not...

I am 25 and married. My husband runs off with his secretary and leaves me with our 4 year old daughter and 6 month old son. I am not getting any child support from the lowlife.
I am working 40 hours a week at a $10.00 an hour job (which is not a lot but is more than many Americans make and is far above minimum wage) BEFORE taxes since that is what welfare goes by I am making approximately $1600 a month. Bringing home probably $1200.
Ok so in my state a family of three gets approximately $650 (that is not an exact amount I do not know the exact numbers)
Ok so now at this point in time I am bringing home at the very most $1850 a month.
In my area two bedroom apartments at the very lowest are approximately $650. So now I am down to $1200.
Daycare for my infant in my area is $220 a week or $880 a month. Daycare for my preschooler a week is $190 or $760 a month.
Now my bills are higher than what I am making a month WITH the help of welfare.

And how am I supposed to get ahead?
Plus I still have not boughten groceries, paid the car, phone, electricity, clothes, shoes, toys etc.

This is not a true story...but it is real life for many many people in America and in some ways myself included.

Do you have the answer since you seem to know so much?

Poverty is a very complex problem and won't be resolved overnight. It's not always just a matter of someone getting a job. There are usually many social, family and/or mental health obstacles to over come. The welfare laws are set up so that even if someone has a job they can't get ahead and get back on their feet. If you make more money you lose health and dental insurance for your children or you can't afford a car or food. Transportation alone is a big expense for low-income people!

Perhaps if the minimum wage were raised to $10.00, hard working people wouldn't need so much help!

I wonder if there is anyone willing to do what it really takes to end poverty in the United States!

You simply don't have a clue, do you? By the way, what's your background? How old are you? What do you do for a living? Unfortunately, there are some people out there who abuse the system. However, not everyone who uses it does. Believe it or not, there are some people out there who use the system as a hand up, not a hand out. I know, because my mother was one of those people. Also, why should the children of the poor be traumatized by being torn away from their parents and put up for adoption? You're both clueless and lacking in compassion, and that's a dangerous combination. And unfortunately, it's people like you who are in charge right now. It's amazing how the superrich can just talk about how the rest of us need to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps, while they don't have to do a damn thing to earn what they've been given. Hell, sometimes they even have the White House handed to them on a silver platter! F**king hypocrites!

Do you have any basis for your rediculous proposal? Social Security is a welfare program, so are farm subsidies, food stamps, and countless other programs. Welfare is necessacary, but not for the people on it as much as for society in general. There would be an even larger rift between the rich and poor in this country without it, and there isn't enough money in the economy to provide enough for the poor if you were to abolish social programs. You have such a narrowminded approcah that nobody will ever change your opinion, but thankfully there are few people in any position of power who share your warped view.

Yes, I agree with you. Granted, there are some families that really do need Welfare, but some also abuse the program. There should definitely be a time frame, say 1 year or so to get a job and such, or else you are kicked off the program.

I agree with getting rid of corporate welfare and not breaking up families.

Welfare reform works and gets people up and out of poverty. The system is not perfect, but does work. How about raising minimum wage to help people in low skill jobs get off welfare?

You really need a clue, I can't believe a person can be so cold as to suggest breaking up a family as a solution to poverty.

It's unconstitutional!!!!!!! There is no legitimate authorization for the Fed to have any transfer payments. See below for more.

I was watching a local newscast when I was in college. (They DID have TV back in the 60's). They showed some woman who was protesting for an increase in her welfare benefits. She said "I DEMAND an increase in my welfare benefits. It's my RIGHT."

At that moment that I realized that I had to abandon my family's Democrat roots and switch to the Republicans. While I haven't been totally happy with them, it's the best chance I've got to get the government I'm looking to get.

By the way. That sentiment holds for any Federal transfer payments. The federal government shouldn't take money from A to GIVE it to B, unless B did something to EARN it. That holds for giant corporations, mom-&-pop stores, senior citizens or babies.

If you haven't earned it, don't expect Uncle Sam to give it to you.

Welfare is needed, but needs to be reformed. Able bodied people who choose not to work or can not find work should receive job training and placement. If they can not maintain that job they can join military or civil service.

And "professor" open your eyes as Higher education is a beneficiary of so called "cooperate welfare". They receive more breaks and cash then any other business in the country.

I believe people need help and that amount of help should be dependent upon the reason that someone is on welfare. I do think there are other things that can be done to help with the current financial situation... Everyone needs to look at plans and policies that seem to be going nowhere... Oh and fix social security you fools! (im not a republican, dont confuse me with the dark side...)

Why are you concerned about this? Do you hate poor people, or are you worried about the money? If it's the latter, you should worry abour Corporate Welfare. Much more money in handouts go to them, and they should be getting by on Free Enterprise. Also, there's always a ton of money wasted, even LOST, in the Defense Department. Get on THEIR backs. Leave poor people alone.
